I have come across reference to a "Top Slide sole plate" for the ML7 by Ian Bradley.

I want to fit a different tool holder to my Super 7 that is to tall to fit to the top slide, and this would I think solve the problem.

Is there a drawing or M.E/M.E.W. article describing this item?

          Ken

The only "top slide sole plate" reference by Bradley that I know of is in his ML7 lathe manual, and it is simply a raising plate to lift the complete top slide together with it's base.

As you know, normally the rotation of the topslide is limited in each direction, the sole plate enables it to rotate completely, without the topslide handle hitting the cross-slide fittings.

Don't think it will help you, as it makes the topslide higher.

-boxforduniversal base - 1.jpgKen, what would probably help you is a bas e like the Boxford Universal Base, which has a taper spigot ( like the Super 7 topslide base) on one side, and the usual Boxford fixing slot on the other. See pics

              Hi Robbo

Thanks for the reply, Yes that would be the one.

I was after information with regard to layout/dimensions etc to see what was involved in making one.

My intention is to mount the tool post direct to the sole plate/raising plate without the top slide, making the plate the correct thickness to get the centre height correct.

I do not have a ML7 top slide base to measure.

Perhaps Tubal Cain's Gibralter toolpost drawing can be adapted to suite:

                  Ken,

Have sent you a PM with extract from the book.

If you want an ML7 topslide Base plate I have a couple of old ones.

Sorry its in the wrong thread

I would like to congratulate Stephen Wessel on his Modern flute making articles. It is most informative and Stephen details many clever techniques.

                      Hi Ken,

As I tend to use the top slide ( or compound as it was known when I was a lad) very infrequently on my ML7, I made a raising block from a chuck backplate casting.

The block is secured to the front 2 "T" slots on the cross slide which puts the toopost stud in the same position as the original. The top surface of the block is machined to be slightly lower than the equivalent height of the top slide so that the Dickson type toolholder can accommodate larger tools .

Maybe this is possible on the Super 7.

                      Gordon.

                        Hi Gordon

Thanks for the suggestion and photo.

I have been trying to think of other things that could be used.

Good bit of thinking outside the box.

Robbo has a ML7 top slide base which I think will do the trick.

                          Ken

The ML7 topslide base has those curved slots which will match up with the T-slots on either ML7 or Super 7 croo-slides.

So maybe you can take off the S7 topslide complete and mount the toolpost on the ML7 topslide base and hold it with a couple of T-bolts. Might need to make a bigger spigot on the underneath to fit the bigger hole in the S7 slide for positive location.

Problem is this seems too easy, can't possibly work ! crook

I'll put a bit of T strip in for you to try.

                            Hi Robbo

As you suggest my intention is to remove the S7 top slide assembly complete.then fit the tool post to the ML7 base.

I have a plug for the hole in the S7 cross slide, an appropriate size hole can be bored to fit the ML7 spigot.

Thanks to you for all your help, and everybody who took the time to post.

                            Ken

Well they say everything comes to he who waits.

I have recently obtained the three volumes of "In the Workshop by Duplex (I love old books) .

On pages 152 to 158 of volume three chapter nine "Machining V-Pulleys" are details complete with drawing of making the sole plate.

Typical now I have solved the problem another way.

Looking at the date of the book 1949 I would think it appeared in Model Engineer about that time.

                              Ken
