I brought the minimag single ignition set up for my engine. Reading the instructions leaves 1 question at least unanswered and that is the distance between the hall sensor and the magnet.

Does anyone know the maximum distance at which it will work before it will no longer work, as I have an idea where I want to set it up.

I would guess that the closer I can install it, the better. I know how I want to fix it all in place but maybe will look out of place trying to get it close.

I still need to look at other ideas as of yet

surely you can test that yourself by flashing the magnet past at varying distances?

I would set it at 0.25mm, 0.010″ and if possible design in some shimming to be able to try fine adjustments. Endfloat on the shaft must be allowed for if there is any.

Bit late as I just wanted to dig out the instructions to check. the S/S give 0.040″ and the Jerry Howell give 0.031″ which will give you a bit more to play with.

Thank you all. It is a shame that the instructions I have do not give any information on the best gap to use, which would be helpful. They don’t even mention which pole is best to face the sensor.

All I need to do now is decide which is north or south on the magnet

I take it that the magnet can be mounted in any material, ie Ali cast or plastic

Material needs to be non magnetic or insulate the magnet, South pole see the Jerry Howell instructions above for both

All very interesting ! I recently had an issue where it was clear the sensor had been rubbing the the flywheel. Wear on the main bearings and some degree of flexing had caused this. I would have said 25 thou, so 31 is not far out, 40 seems wide. Using paper or a small slip of flattened copper pipe of the right wall thickness is handy for setting up. Noel.
