Just spotted this on ebay…..I'm all for a challenge, but reckon if this poor mill was a horse it would be kinder to shoot it….what a shame ! One brave bidder so far.

Blimey, I can't believe someone has actually placed a bid of £500 for that poor wreck! Even more implausible is the statement "Not been used for years but all works."!!

If you look at the bidder who has bravely bid and the lathe that the seller is selling also ,the bidders have low feedback and have been bidding a lot on lots of items and quite a lot of bid retractions something fishy going on here I feel

If some one has a rather deep swimming pool and a lot of molasses it might clean up nicely.

Sad really as it does look like a decent milling machine – possibly rescued from a scrap yard by the look of it.

There is a lot of that sort of thing goes on in certain areas – some one just bidding things up, or trying.

It does look as if its already in a scrapyard judging by the way they have swept up to take photographs.!

I have heard of machines with light surface rust from not being used but that looks beyond Scotchbrite and oil (the machinery dealers main tools).

I think this is available with a two axis protrack CNC system. It may well be cheaper than buying spares.

The dealers I used to visit a lot used paraffin and wet and dry and as they pointed out the work couldn't be seen afterwards and the machines were still ok.

Some one on an astro forum has been using electrolysis. It looks like it works well and large things can be done via a plate with wet towels between the plate and the surface.

There was a gardener of all people in B'ham that really liked to find machines with crusty rust on them. It took ages but he put something on it and it all slowly came off. No one knows what but it took months. He might even still be around.

Those bids a probably from the seller you can do this as you list it its a way of starting the bidding higher that zero but not having a reserve, in Whitby there are a lot of boat yards that have simply been abandoned, I suspect some one is clearing one out and is kidding them selves about the value of said items……..

Nothing wrong with it, just been badly described.

They are listing it as a mill instead of a boat anchor.

I feel that ebay is getting to be a sad place for buying used machine tools. The prices of the old stuff have increased to silly levels really. Take this one, sad reason for the sale but the only comment in the listing is interested – a foot pump and a can ?

                                    **LINK**

Part of the problem is that people will pay £200 or more for things that just aren't really worth that much. All ok usually just means the chuck spins if it's fitted with a motor and and the rest can be moved about. The missing part from this particular one seems to be the treadle. Any thing is generally OK for a model engineer it seems even from people that know what they are selling. If its vaguely suitable for clock making watch the price soar. Clapped out Schaublins have always fascinated me. They often crop up.

laughI feel that their scrap value aught to be mentioned in the listings and prices limited to 50% more in many cases. I once had a fairly hefty weight of cast iron about so phoned a dealer to get a price for it – not worth the cost of the diesel to get it there.

Well Chaps, I think that this is one of those collections of machines that you would have to go and look at before you bid, because if these are machines that are just rusty, but otherwise good, they could be worth buying, but with the opening bids set where they are, I doubt if anyone would bother! Also if you were going to "clean them up for the buyer" then why wouldnt you do that BEFORE taking the pictures, and also move all the junk from around them as well! It never ceases to amaze me that people don't bother. When I first saw the pics of my Covmac, it looked awfull, but when I went to see it before buying it was obvious that it was just covered in a deep layer of muck and dust, with a load of junk around it, and after I bought it, most of it just washed off with parrafin and a bit of scrubbing, to such an extent that I probably won't even repaint it, but these guys have started the bids to high, and for the sake of a few days cleaning, could probably realise far more return than they are going to get at the moment.

I suspect the most valuable parts are the lovely wooden handles on the gravers providing there is no wood worm. I did ask what the reserve was to enable me to judge it's value – no reply and in any case as some of it is probably unrecoverable well past it already.

I suspect it's not all that uncommon for that sort of dealer to finish up with item no longer available. My latest pillar drill came like that. I asked if I could come and look – I did and they cancelled the listing and sold it to me saving us both some money. That one was buy it now too – they told me not to worry about that – it would be available when I got there.
