My Makita 12volt drill has lost its power. Bought a new battery, even used a different charger, but only 30% of power / speed available. Do I suspect the windings or the variable speed trigger unit ?

          Probably the trigger unit.

Not sure if it's the same but I have a spare trigger from a 9v Makita drill. Gratis, if it's any good to you send me a PM..

Brushes are quite often the first thing to wear out on electric drills. Could be worth checking.

Thanks for the offer Dave B, but mine is 12v. There is a 3 pin "package" at the rear of the motor (Thyristor ??) so I guess that the 9v trigger is slightly different to the 12v one. I couldn't get the trigger apart to see what was inside it. The motor smells a bit "motorery" as if its worked a bit too hard at one time – probably so as I built our house with it.

The thyristor is probably a mosfet, typically an IRF530…..from battery drills I've encountered..

If you can access the connections on the back of the motor, might be worth checking to see if its receiving the full battery volts…
