Looking for an old model railway article. “Stuck on Stucco”

Hi Everyone,

I used to buy the Railway Modeller magazine and several other model railway mag's. In one of them was an article called "Stuck on Stucco" which described how to build the town houses and possibly the railway buildings using stucco (or modelling clay). It may have been written by Alan Downs.

Would anyone happen to be familiar with this article and know which magazine it's in? Possibly mid 80's?

I wrote to the folks at PECO a couple of years back but they were unable to locate it.

That rings a bell – perhaps I reads something in the 70s? I recall a system of plastic moulds we filled with plaster to make interlocking sections of wall.

One of my albums shows what can be done using a laser printer!

Thank you for the replies chaps. I remember the Linka system but this was more of a scratch built theme. If memory serves I believe it was a GWR station (possibly a terminus) with Georgian town houses set on an upper street level to the platform.

I can't help with the Stuck on Stucco article but Dave Rowe is/was an exponent of this technique using the Das modelling compound. Look out for his book Architectural Modelling in 4mm Scale ISBN 0 906867 12 6, Wild Swan Publications, my copy is of 1983 vintage.

See also his book Industrial and Mechanised Modelling ISBN 0 906867 84 3, Wild Swan Publications 1990.

I believe I'm correct in saying that he and his wife Shirley produced a superlative scale model of a corn mill that was about to be demolished in Devon (?) and was written up in the American Narrow Gauge and Short Line GAZETTE magazine. Finally I remember seeing a wharf scene with a moving bridge, trackage and goodness knows what else at a railway modelling exhibition.

Are they still modelling?

I tracked down a reference to the magazine I was looking for. Just for completeness I've included it here.

Model Railways magazine August 1982.

In the June to September 1982 magazines there were four articles by Allan Downes, "Take a sheet of card", "A Matter of Factories", "In the Tudor style" and "Stuck on Stucco".
