I am very new to "engineering" etc so please excuse my terminology etc if I get it wrong!

I have recently purchased my first lathe a Denford Viceroy. The lathe has powered longtitudonal and transverse movements however I discovered that these appeared to "stick" every so often.

When I disassembled the lathe apron I discovered that the worm gear which transmits the movements from the feedshaft has serveral teeth missing

Can this gear be repaired? if not how to I go about getting a replacement? I have been reading up on gears however have got a bit lost in the terminolgy for trying to decribe or measure one.

      Thanks for any advice

          Hi Ken,

do you know what kind of material the worm gear is made of? If steel or cast iron it may be possible to drill some small holes where the teeth are missing, insert some steel pins and braze. Then you can use a suitable cutter and cut correct spaces between the "new teeth".

          Regards Thor

My first step would be to contact Tony

              Hello Ken,

Looking at the photo it looks as if the larger gear is fitted to a spigot on the smaller gear, it would be difficult to make the combination otherwise.

That being the case it might be possible to extract the smaller gear by drifting it out, buy a replacement from say HPC [ assuming it is 20 degree pressure angle] and reunite them again as a press fit with a little loctite in the joint.

My concern would also be with the mating gear, is that damaged too, and where did the stripped teeth go? Nest question, why did it happen?

              Regards Brian

                Ken,

You need to talk to John Ward – http://www.latheparts.co.uk – who makes/supplies replacement gears and parts for these machines and Boxford/Southbend which are very similar, at very modest cost. He'll be able to supply the correct gears. If you check his website you'll find contact details.

Many thanks for the replies. I have e-mailed both Tony and John as suggested and see what they say.

Thor – I had thought something similar and if it had only been one or two teeth may have had a go however I think it may be beyond my abilities at present.

Brian – you are correct there are actually two gears which I think could be split. I am not sure how to spec a replacement? Not really sure I know what 20 degree pressure angle means I am afraid!

                    Ken,

Just for info – I've never had any problems getting in touch with John Ward, but am aware from others' comments that when he is very busy it can take a little while for him to respond to emails – a 'phone call early evening might get you a quicker response and advice, if you don't hear back from him shortly.

                    Robin
