By lateral movement, do you mean the centre is moving along the axis of the body, ie telescoping?

If so, you may be able to eliminate this play by unscrewing the plug at the end of the morse taper. This could reveal a screw which retains the shaft in the bearings. Try tightenig it to remove end-play, Better still, dismantle, clean and re-grease.

          Hope that helps.

By lateral do you mean axial?

If axial its not what I would expect but it should not affect operation as the slack is taken up by the pressure from the tailstock.

I will have to type faster next time!

I have always had a bit of axial movement on my (bought new) centre, but it runs dead true in use.

Yes telescoping about 1.5mm i put a thin rod down the end and no movement and no plug in the end.It turns very smooth and no movement up or down and most annoying i don't now where it came from(must have some good gremlins for a change) i will give it a try tomorrow and report how it runs.

I think the drawing on page 2007 of this catalogue pdf **LINK** shows the internal construction of your centre. End play suggests that someone has previously attempted to drive the centre shaft out and failed. If it is built that way the end cap could have been shifted causing the twin race angular contact bearing at the front to run slack.

                  Clive.

Looks like that section of the catalogue starts at page 2000 so it not very far in.
