my son has recently acquired a Juliet LBSC loco. it needs a little work to get running. i cant find any pictures or drawings of the loco i have. it has a Stephensons link on the outside. think its very early. the link isnt currently setup very well and will only reverse. i have a feeling part of it is backwards.

does any one have any info tucked away. i will add some pictures when in the workshop next

          Hi Adrian

I saw a photo of one once with outside WaIschaerts', and assumed it used the cylinders from the Baker valve gear version. I doubt I can be any help but must admit that I am interested in learning more as my son has a part-finished Juliet Baker.

I'm afraid the website isn't set up to accept photos directly. You will have to put the pictures in an album before you can link to them. Instructions are here.

          Brian G

Edit: Too many "once"s in first sentence.

            Hi Adrian,

So far as I know LBSC never described a Juliet with outside Stephensons valve gear, only Baker, so it's unlikely there will be any drawings or information about it. He did build his own version of Tich with outside Stepehensons though and possibly the builder of your son's loco based it on that? I think LBSC did write something on the Stephensons Tich in Model Engineer. I'll have a look and see if I can find it.

              Hi again Adrian,

LBSC decribes the outside Stephensons valve gear for Tich in ME Volume 120 Issue 3012. I can scan it and let you have a copy if it would help. The valve gear could have been adapted to Juliet by just altering the length of the valve rod so long as the cylinder ports are set out the same as for Tich.

The valve gear replaces the normal eccentrics with two return cranks and the positions of these are set during the build but they could have moved causing your problems. If the cranks are set correctly then the only adjustment of the timing is by setting the valves.

                  Hi Adrian –

Is there any chance that you could post a picture of the valve gear?

The way the link in Stephensons valve gear is suspended can produce symptoms such as you describe – ie running badly or not at all in one direction. This is an issue with at least one other LBSC's designs.

It is a bit puzzling at first how to post pictures on the site, but this guide should help **LINK**

                  Take care, Nick (another one!)

                    Hi Adrian,

Here's the layout for the Tich valve gear so you can compare it with your Juliet:

                    tich outside stephensons layout.jpg

As Nick says, it could just be badly designed. LBSC admiited that he didn't know a lot about valve gears and designed them by making mock ups with card, tin and pins. In fact, looking at the fact that the expansion link is suspended from the bottom, the valve events could be pretty awful.

Hi Adrian, to be honest, I think you actually have a Tich, not a Juliet, the wheels look too small and the frames look too short. The wheels on a Juliet are 3" on tread and the frames are 17 1/2" long, where as the wheels on a Tich are 2" on tread and the frames are 12 7/8" long.

                            Regards Nick.

P.S. Duncan posted while I was looking up the measurements.

                                Thanks for help

Wheels are 2” and frame longer that 13” so must be a bit of a mashup. Only going from what I could see on the web and the guy it’s from said it was a Juliet.

                                will look through the link.

Hi Adrian, if you are measuring over the buffer beams, the Tich should be 13-1/8". The picture above with the boiler, looks like the Tich variation that LBSC described in Vol. 118 issue No. 2961, 20th February 1958, pages 238 to 240 and 250. The GA illustration, shows the valve gear that's on your photo above.

                                  Regards Nick.

Hi Adrian, you could enquire at classified adds other options could be Ebay or you could even ask in the latetest "wanted" ads on the right hand side of this page. The original series for Tich was in Vols 100 to 105.

                                      Regards Nick.
