Can anyone suggest what jointing sheet I should use on my Taylor Twin steam engine. It is a 2.5" x 2.5" engine and jointing faces in question are cast iron to cast iron. I have looked at commercial sheets but the cost seems prohibitive. What do you use?

If the surfaces are reasonably close fitting, then good quality brown paper from, say, an envelope is effective.

You can get the proper gasket materials here – not expensive.

I just use a liquid gasket material from the likes of Halfords as you don't need to make any allowance for thickness when making the engine. Most of teh model engineering suppliers will sell sheett jointing such as Reeves for example

Just as an aside, really: the pig iron polishers (ships' engineers) used to use old navigation charts, wiped in oil for gaskets, mostly for pumps and the like, 'tis true but also for the steam auxiliaries when nothing else was to hand.

The reference to the engineers was purely in jest, in case any former ones take exception. I learned lots from them.
