Indexer?

I've been 'given' one of these (£10), it has a Burnerd chuck attached to it. All seem in good condition, I haven't had time for a real good look at it but wondering how to remove the chuck, supposing it can come off?

That style normally is for 5C collets so maybe the chuck is on a 5C shaft and has a small locking ring at the back or is glued in.

A picture of the actual one would be interesting.

As said the chuck may be on a 5C arbor, undo the knurled ring on the back end, may need a slight tap with a soft hammer to release the taper

A view from either end would be better then it would be possible to see if the chuck has screws from the front directly into the index ring, the index ring may have CSK holes in it for screws into the back of the chuck or the nut on the back as mentioned above.

So you are missing the nut to draw in a 5C collet or a chuck mounting arbor.

Are there any cap head screws visible on the face of the chuck? If there are then these are most likely holding it to the index ring so undo those.

If there are no visible screws then undo the clamp screw at the rear of the indexer and then screw off the clamp and slide the spindle out. You can now see if there are any screws countersunk or counterbored through the index plate holding on the chuck

It resembles a Kalamazoo indexer. I have one suggestion for an improvement: Mill or grind flats on the sides parallel with the rotation axis. That will allow it to be held in the vise.

Have you removed the 2 clamps at the rear end ? There maybe something behind them that releases the spindle and chuck.

It looks like the two hinged parts at the back are held closed by a screw you haven't shown us. Do their sloped edges fit into a groove in the back of an arbor? Is the step in the bore indication of a tube, the back end of a 5C fitting, perhaps just held by rust?

I have dismantled and cleaned everything, and posted some more pics in the album which perhaps better shows how things fit together. Undoing the clamp at the rear allows the shaft and chuck to come out, the chuck is attached to the head by three bolts. There is what appears to be a short sleeve inside the bore held in with a split pin which when removed doesn't allow any movement of the sleeve, it may be a very tight fit perhaps. But the internals and condition appear ok and so I'm happy with it.
