      Hi.

Does anyone know if there is enough “meat” in the Hemmingway rotary broaching tool kit to allow it to use broaches with a 1/2″ shank?

I believe it’s designed for 8mm shank tools, but the 1/2″ versions are a lot cheaper…..

      Thanks!

No – the toolbits clamp in a sleeve supported in bearings, so these limit the bore size with little room for expansion –  there’s an ‘end-on’ view on their website that illustrates the point.

If you want to use 1/2″ toolbits I don’t think it’d be too hard to scale the plans around a set of larger bearings..

When you say the toolbits are a lot cheaper do you intend buying in??

Having made ghe Hemingwaykits rotary broach and used commercial 1/2″ (and bigger) ones at work, I would advise getting the appropriate tool holder.

Also, having broached 8mm hex in 303 stainless at home, I guess you’ll need a powerful lathe for larger broaching.
