… however, I don't even know how to get the hands off …

      .

Carefully [!] and with a straight pull

If you're lucky, you may do it with your nails; otherwise you need either a pair of miniature crowbars or a proper hand-puller tool … have a look at the current MEW for inspiration.

      .

google search for 'clock hand removal tool' will help.

        Fiona

To get the case off to see whats rattling

Take the hand knob off the rear of the spindle at the back of the case

Remove the finials of the top of the columns

        Take the cross piece off

then the whole clock will lift of the racks

then remove the 2 screws next to the hand knob (now removed)

Then the back of the case will come off revealing the mechanism.

Thank you Michael and Ian for your replies. What is the MEW Michael? I have looked up the clock hand removal tools – handy little gadget!

Ian, how do I remove the hand knob – it just twizzles around moving the hands and doesn't want to pull off?!

          Confused but determined!

Just pull or use a little lever…hold the minute hand and one or the other will come off hopefully the knob

              Fiona,

May I suggest that you have a look towards the top left of this page devil

The logo with the 'sky & sand' colour scheme.

                Fiona,

                With apologies for the delay

[ a streaming cold is not conducive to photography of clocks ]

You may have already got there, but; for the record here are photos showing the two screws that hold the movement and front plate; plus one 'nut & bolt' that holds the weight.

Hi Michael, thank you so much for the photos.

Must confess to not having got any further – it was back to school on Thursday and we have horses that are very time consuming! I still haven't plucked up the courage to pull (gently or otherwise) the hands. The minute one comes off easily but the hour one seems stuck fast – I'm terrified of something snapping!

I will get brave at some point this week and keep you posted. Hope the cold is better – there is nothing worse than man flu!! sad

You may find that the hour hand can be left attached to the bush which goes through the Face, so that when you remove the Face, it stays loosely attached to it. Underneath it will be a double gear which is driven by the minute hand spindle and drives the hours.

Peer between the face and the main works and this should be clear.

                    Cheers, Tim

Hi. Took the plunge and got the case off. Re attached the weight and compared all the photos I could find with mine. Couldn't see anything amiss and re-assembled it and attached the hand unfortunately, the pendulum won't swing for more than two or three times before it stops. If I push it with my finger it moves the fly wheel (?)

                      Any thoughts gratefully appreciated!

                        .

Have you checked that the two pillars are straight, and parallel ?

I've put Ian's clock aside until my coughing and sneezing abates … but the last work I did on it was to straighten the rack and carefully set the alignment of the pillars. There is very little spare energy in this clock, and any excess friction is likely to cause problems. [Also note that if the glass and bezel are off, you will be losing some drive weight.]

                        MichaelG.

I have another newly bought gravity clock but unlike the one that Micheal has I just cant stop this one..it seems VERY sensitive to the position of the pendulum ball and the fine adjustment screw however

I’m just at the moment printing some faces up on glass blanks

Morning. Sorry to hear you are still suffering Michael. A clock that doesn't stop… does that mean time goes faster Ian? !!

Unfortunately no joy with my clock. The pillars seem straight, unless there is a specific way to set them up and even with the glass on I only get 3 or 4 'tick tocks' (how technical am I !!) before it slows and stops. sad
