Help rebuilding and modifying an ml4

I have recently bought an ml4 to replace a Chinese lathe. Bought it as one that had been restored only to find that a lot of corners have been cut. Im on the lookout for parts or unserviceable lathes to get parts off. If not any ideas on what would be good modifications and how to make it a better lathe.

The ML4 was produced over a couple of decades and in many versions, so it would help if you can provide details or, even better, photographs. The more you tell us, the more we can help.

Have you searched this forum for threads about the ML4? There have been plenty, containing a great deal of information. There is overlap between the ML1,2,3 and 4 so it is worth searching for all those as well.

Have you read about the ML1,2,3,4 on Tony Griffiths' website lathes.co.uk?

Does your lathe have a serial number (stamped on a raised panel on the bed, below the headstock)? Does it have tumbler reverse? Do the cross slide and top slide have dials? Is the spindle nose thread 7/8" diameter or 1 1/8" diameter? Which version of the tailstock have you got? (there were three, to my knowledge).

There are usually parts available on ebay but just like the lathes condition will vary. I can't help wondering if you have fell into the repainted lathe trap.

I've always had a vague interest in an ML1 as it's the smallest.

As it's not far I would be tempted to go take a look at that one if I wanted a lathe like that but nice paintwork doesn't tell all. I would want to see it turming with a slow feed to see what the finish was like. Also to measure the taper it turns. Interesting mod to the spindle.

Good parts for ml1,2,3,4 are like hens teeth ,I’m speaking from experience having previously owned the ml3 . Saying that is your ml4 complete? .
