        > Health and safety wouldn't pass them these days I am sure, having said that, in the '40s and 50s,

They disappeared from conservation in the late 80s -lots of much nicer (lighter, more reliable, more flexible, safer!) machines now, including marvellous machines designed for small, sloping Swiss meadows, even pedestrian steered micro-balers.

I do like the allen scythe with pull along seat idea although I'd hate to see it run a muck!

I remember the Allen Scythe with great fondness. The council used to use one to mow the meadow just up from our house in the Forest of Dean and the old chap who was supposed to be doing the job used to let me do it instead whilst he sat on the wall and smoked. I was about 10 or 11 at the time a loved every minute. Just shows how daft you are when you are a kid, it was brilliant.

I've got pet sheep… just cannot train them to only eat grass and leave the fruit trees etc alone.

Neighbours flock broke in last year and ate half my veggie patch. Fortuately i grow 3-4 times what we need.

Helical twisting force- that's exactly what a big strimmer does to the spine. If you want nice short grass get geese- best burgler detterent ever.

Allen Scythes are dreadful! I had a summer holiday job on the council grass cutting gang and managed to drive one into the river as the dog clutch would not release when the was any load on the dogs. As I hung grimly onto the bars, with the clutch lever released but the drive dogs still hanging on the narrow tyres slowly cut through the river bank whilst still spinning. The inevitable happened when the carburettor intake sunk below the surface. The resulting hydraulic lock comprehensively wrecked the engine😒

                I was not popular!
