Haynes Hot Air Engine

I fancied a simple project and I’ve not made a hot air engine before.

 

 

Although it did sort of work without the heat sink it is much more flexible and reliable with it.  Before I made the heat sink I got it too hot and melted the silver solder, hence the non-standard end cap.  I found a PDF of the original book on the web.  Youtube video below.

I made one of these Haynes design engines at school when I was 15, with the cast base and flywheel.  Unfortunately it got mislaid, but I made another a few years ago with a fabricated base.  I too found a need to cool the transfer cylinder, but used water cooling via a copper coil.  I now need to make a burner similar to yours, the one in the Haynes design has no air impingement and it smokes terribly.  In the meantime I’ve taken to using the meths burner from a Trangia camping stove.

Have you tried or considered making the Haynes stationary Steam Engine and Boiler (book 1)?

I did a few experiments with the burner.  I would like to be able to reduce the flame a little more but if I turn it down too much the flame burns at the jet.  I think the jet needs a smaller orifice but the smallest drill I have is 0.35mm.  Alternatively a longer burner tube would probably be good with the air holes further away from the jet but space is limited.

Not really interested in the Haynes steam engine, it was a simple hot air engine I was looking for and this one fitted the bill.  Being a ‘jack of all trades’ and definitely ‘master of none’ I’ve done a V10, compression ignition and 4 stroke aero engine, throttle governed and hit ‘n’ miss farm engines and a flame licker.  Going to have a go at making a clock next.
