It was all my grand’das fault !

He first allowed me near his machines to make a brass nut and bolt on a Myford ML7, long since gone. I wasn’t much higher than the bench.

When bikes became a thing, my first efforts were machining up a set of ‘mud slinging’ washers with a three thou clearance (by eye!) to cover cartridge bearings on unusual hubs for the time, second pair in Britain i was told, which engineered away the curve in the end of the spoke making the wheel strength better by a factor of about four or five, that was decades ago, that design is par for the course these days, but then, it meant speed and reliability and a whole lotta fun…

When motorbikes became a thing, we had access to a network of fields and weekends were spent fixing the dirt bikes of friends, but that was more strip and rebuild processes.

Since then is a very long varied story, but suffice to say I’ve had three workshops, the first a huge communal artistic outfit, wildly creative, great fun and equally annoying. The rest were a bit more prosaic being able to manipulate pretty much anything in mostly wood and metal and less so, stone. The basics as it were.

Right before the great recession of 2007 hit, being in the market for Second Hand Precision Japanese lathe, the name of which escapes me- Later, surprisingly, discovered that Axminster were selling these under their moniker labeled CQ230A-2/910. As you’ve already guessed that didn’t happen, but that would have been for me the culmination of twenty five years of experience in tooling and workshops, taking matters to the next level.  It is mind boggling to think that this was close to two decades ago now. I don’t have much equipment left, as you can guess.

The various Stirling Engines my grandfather made are occasionally demonstrated to siblings. I did have a hand in making one of these,  getting the tolerances juuuust right on the piston barrels was challenging, they are tiny, so they cannot have the friction of the larger, essentially stationary type engines.

I do however have a question to  ‘take off the shelf’ and impress upon some one with more experience than my self regarding the thread I’ll start…
