Has anyone any experience with the Eaton DE1 series of simple "Direct On Line Starter substitution VFD drives? Rather cheaper than the usual brand name inverter suspects but no display and bare minimum of controls. As I understand it in the most basic configuration you just hit the power button and it runs up to nameplates speed in 5 seconds. Turn power off and it drops back to zero in 5 seconds. Connections for a speed control potentiometer along with forward and reverse switches if needed are provided. Clever folk can buy a plug in dooby to fiddle with the usual parameters if need be.

I need a fixed speed drive for the 3 hp, 3 phase pump motor on my just obtained hydraulic car lift and one of these seems ideal for the purpose. Price from Inverter Drive Supermarket is extremely attractive at just under £130 **LINK** for a 2.2 Kw – 3 hp one.

At those prices, if there are no hidden traps for the unwary, it hardly seems worth risking low-end Far Eastern imports via Alibaba et al. OK no snazzy display. BYO switches and pot too. But effectively its the same as the VFD I had on my square column mill. Speed setting via a simple numbered skirt on the potentiometer knob and number to speed translation table glued to the front of the head worked just fine.

Rats! Missed the edit window. Comment about Far Eastern imports is more for folk needing to make every £ do the work of 10 !

I can configure an ABB ACS 150 or Invertek Optidrive E2 to start and run automatically which will do what I need for this job for about £60 more than the Eaton. Still a perfectly reasonable price. But why spend the extra for things I don't need.

          Clive.
