      Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know where I can buy small amounts of double spring washers 6 8 10 12 mm ?

I have tried Ali express but all I see are single spring or wavy washers. Do they go by another name ?

I did find other suppliers who only sell in bulk, so, no prices given.

They used to be quite common years ago, are we using something else now ?

Any advice welcome and thanks in advance because I,m sure someone out there has the answer.

Are they what were called Thackeray washers?

They are not really spring washers as would be used to stop a fastener coming undone, they are often used to control end float or to prevent rattles and provide a resistance so a component stays in position. Often used to control float and maintain the position of rockers on a rocker shaft or stop pillion footrests falling down when in the not used position. They often lack the barb to bite into the metal that a lock type washer would have, in fact it would do damage in the applications I have described.

These were used when mounting Dellorto and Weber DCOE40 and 45 carburetors. The carbs were bolted to the manifold with a spacer between them this spacer has grooves for 'O' rings on each side. The nuts were done up and the gap between the two half's of the washer set to a particular size. IIRC it was around 25thou. This enabled the carbs to move a small amount but stopped the 'O' rings leaking air into the manifold.

Certainly sold as spring washers in my days as a country ironmonger! Made by Herbert Terry in Reddich, and were a devil to count as they always stuck together. Still have some Terrys flat steel spanners in my workshop, but they are all imperial, and not much use on metric!

Ah Adam, Where have all the country ironmongers gone ? or even the city ones.

They are now as rear as hens teeth. There are no real Hardware shops anymore, only shops selling some bits of hardware, not quite the same thing

Those washers must not be much in demand these days, single spring can be bought everywhere for half nothing but double spring are sold EACH !

Must be older than I thought !

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

I bought some 3/16" a while back from moss-europe.co.uk but the price gave me a shock!

Larry not all traditional hardware shops have disappeared we have one locally, they have always had what I have wanted no matter how obscure. The shop is absolutely crammed with stock, the aisles between the shelves are so narrow you can’t get two people passing. If the item you want isn’t on the shelves then you can bet it is stored in their large basement. They have stock in there that I haven’t seen for years, I would just say it takes a certain type of eccentric person to run an establishment like that and the owner of this one certainly fits the profile. Unfortunately these establishments are now few and far between, the victims of the growth of the large superstores and society is the poorer for it. Apologies for sidetracking the thread.

LUCKY YOU, to have such a store near you. We used to have them too, back in the day.

Don't even mention Super Stores !!!.

Probably never to restock after selling you the last one they have had in stock for 50 years.🙂. But, yes, those stores are becoming rarer every year. One needs to ask the ‘old hands’ rather than the younger staff in my local hardware shop, to avoid a vacant stare.

Anybody know where I could get some of these Thakery washers 5/32 OD in phosphor bronze? LBSC specifies them for his Everlasting blowdown valve, page 170 of Shop Shed and Road, I have been searching for years so would be very grateful if anyone can provide any leads, I only need about a dozen.
