Thanks very much for all the useful advice – you are all very helpful chaps!

I have now ordered a DTI and Dial Gauge, both 0.01mm resolution, cost me 35 quid for the pair which I am quite happy with, and it looks as it is useful to have both – one poster quite correctly said if I get a high precision (and expensive) one as a learner I am inevitably going to stuff it <g>

I will read all the links and articles, it is very interesting how much there is to learn but I guess the knowledge will come with experience hopefully

      Regards

      Chris Parsons

        A sensible choice, Chris.

That is a very interesting site (long island indicator ) and it's good to see they are critical of the home grown brands as well.

I suppose that most of us would not even think about the quality of the internal mechanism and would shop for known brands thinking they are getting a top of the range unit .

I think you've hit the proverbial Nail on the head, Ian.

Regrettably; you simply cannot trust the name on the dial any more.

"Badge Engineering" or, as Long Island Indicator puts it, the "Vanity Dial" … is rife.

Long island don't say anything about K&S dial gauges. I have this one, made in the DDR G&M list a similar metric one at £55. I have no idea of the quality, but i paid about £20 for it ten years ago.

I recently bought a Clarke one. The problem I find if the indicator dial (the bit you turn to zero) is very sticky. I put this down to the fact it's a clarke

what can I replace it with and what should it spend

                  Hi Chris
I would go for the plunger type as well . the spin off is you can use it on your mill/drill as well
                  regards Nobby
