Shipping containers are designed to float, a company I once worked for had one moored of a pier to prove it. After a few months they had to remove it in case it broke loose. It was not not filled with lathes tho'. ps- A fourpenny one relates to pre-decimal currency, I am fluent in both.

I have often wondered that if i came across a floating container far from land and it was floating as per spec. how would you get in to see what was in it? You cannot open the doors and cutting a hole in the top may be dangerous.

It always worried me going across the Atlantic that we might bump into one, as we were passed by container ships almost daily, luckily we had no bad weather.

Clive – Fasten flotation bags to corner castings. Open doors or cut hole in top, find 20 tons of cheap cat food.

              True story about opening containers:

In a previous life when we had a truck garage one of our customers was Freightliners. Now Freightliners had their own premises and staff but they were right idle bastich's and tried to farm out as much work as they could hence us being in the picture.

One day got a phone call, very harassed voice.

"Do you want some sugar? f so get down here ASAP with some black bags"

Shot into Wilco's got some bags and went down in the Donald.

              What a hoot !!

They had pulled a Tate and Lyle container off the train, hidden it in a compound made from other containers and cracked the door open to allow some sugar to drible out but by now you have guessed what happened.

The doors just blew wide open and there was a heap of sugar all over the yard surrounded by all the local riff raff shovelling like mad [ us included ] smiley

There were even local builders shovelling into the back of transit tippers with just a bit of plastic sheeting on the floor.

We filled what bags we had bought, shot back to the garage to drop them off and went to get some more but the local Wilco's were sold out !! Called round another customer and got some animal feed bags and went back.

When we got there there were two fire engines so hung back to see what the crack was, at least we had an excuse for being there with them being a customer. However the fire engines were just cover for the firemen fillig plastic hose reel containers with sugar.

We filled the second set of bags and left but the pile in the yard was about the same size as when we arrived.

Apparently it took all day shovelling to get a clear space to close the doors and get the container back on the train.

Oh happy days, nearly as interesting as the day they lost 20 tonnes of silver bullion.

There is not so many now, but for the last three years in Christchurch, since the earth quakes started, there have been thousands of containers in use, some in the centre of the city, in an area called the Restart Mall, as shops, cafes, and a bank. In other areas they are being used to shore up buildings, and protecting areas from rock falls. Ian S C

If you click the live map and see the exploded magnified view, the vessel seems to be doing a figure of 8. Does anyone here have any idea why that could be?indecision

                      Lost??

Looks like its only an hour or so away so if its not docking until 7.00am must be anchored or on a holding pattern, I'm sure there are a few old sea dogs on here who may have a better explanation.

'Fourpenny one' had a different meaning in our household.

Dad was always threatening brother and I with one when we wouldn't behave etc.

Must check to see how that expression originated.

Geoff – Coffee finished so into the workshop after loading bread machine.

                          Hi

Looking at her details she is not due to dock in Felixstowe until the 10th Nov 0430 UTC. So it looks, as Jason says, she is waiting for the berth to become free.

Hope all is well with the your container.

Fascinating to see so many ships in the channel.

She is 'stopped' so I guess she is just drifting around and occasionally having a burst under way to keep more or less in the same spot/.

Could it be the vessel is waiting to come in with the Tide?

Has anyone been following the Maerask Triple E build, 44 weeks from design to maiden voyage, but it travels slower than other ships in the fleet as this is more fuel efficient, there will be 19 more of these constructed, so all things shortly will be on a "slow boat from China".

                                    Gray,

You are right about the "slow boat from China" Graham. Add to this, many sailings from China have been cancelled in the past few months, and this month shipping lines are offering fewer sailings, with higher shipping costs as we near Christmas. General transit times have increased from 23 days to nearer 30 days.

It is just that these shipping lines seem to have a very delicate relationship with ports of call, especially when you are in need of goods which are on board that particular vessel , and we have experienced ships divert in the past to Rotterdam at last minute, if they are about to encounter problems getting into Felixstowe. So, I am keeping my fingures crossed on this one.

                                          Thaks again, Ketan.

Talking about high seas, reminds me of the time serving aboard the Frigate SAS President Kruger, having above decks (Top-side) out of bounds due to gale force winds..

                                                Talk about rock and rolling.

We where all sitting in the gangways, Officers and Ratings, backs against one bulkhead with feet stretched out against the opposite one, trying to keep us in one spot.

Don't remember what the Bridge was like, but not pleasant I'm sure. Won't even think about the galley.

Those in hammocks had the last laugh though, as anyone with a fixed bunk just gave up trying to kip.

The trouble with these larger ship is that they are now being restricted to the number of ports that can accommodate them. I understand this latest fleet can only work via the Suez Canal, the draft of the vessels being too great for the Panama Canal and some west coast US ports

I am well miffed as I can't quite get that crankshaft onto my lathe !!!! There goes my chance of earning a few bob on the quiet.

Love to see Ketan fitting a 6000HP engine to Mr Stevenson's lathe without telling him ! Teach him to moan about his £2.
