create a blank mortice key on a lathe ?

hi all , i have just started machining as a hobby and my knoledge is pretty much zero , i bought a drummond round bed lathe ,came with a few tools and face plates ,and bits and bobs sure i will eventuly find out what the do.any way my intention is to construct a tool and the part i am stuck on i can only describe as being like the end of a mortice key . you have the main cylindrical part of the body with the upstand post part on top of the cylinder, so in essence it would look like a blank mortice key .any thoughts or idears would be greatfully recived as im in a right mucking fuddle .

Hi Dave,
Depending on the diameter of the cylindrical part and the thickness of the flat part it may be possible to mill a slot in the cylindrical part ans silver solder the flat part into the slot. More information on the dimensions, material and the sort of load the item will be subjected to will help others to come up with viable suggestions.

Hi Dave, not sure what you wan to make, a sketch could help, but you can start with a piece of flat bar and cut out the shape of the "key" then mount in a 4 jaw chuck, support the part you want to turn to the round section with a live centre then turn it to the required size,

The next step will depend on what you finally require but the remaining part of the key you can either mill or hand work to make the remaining part round and you may have to machine the flat part to whatever thickness you want.

I make a component similar to this in this way but don't have any photo's.
