      Hi all

I bought a Cowells 90 HS lathe, I would like to know if this type of 3-jaw chuck has reversible jaws?

      Best regards!
      Robert

If you take the jaws out and look at the teeth at the back if they are a flattened oval shape then they can be reversed if they are a curved shape then separate reversible jaws are needed.

I understand. Thanks for the quick response JasonB

I have to open it, if they are not reversible, where can I buy a set?

If the spindle nose is 40mm diameter then the Emco 5 chucks appear likely contenders as a replacement, provided of course the 3 fixings are positioned as Emco and M5.

The early Emco chucks that operated with a drill chuck type key had reversible jaws.

I don't understand what you mean, this chuck is Emco?
I thought it was the original Cowells chuck

No Robert, I said an Emco 5 chuck is a contender as a replacement if spindle nose and chuck fixing PCD are the same.

Contact Cowells? They should know? They should be able to offer a set, if available?

                      .

I suppose it may have been supplied by Cowells … but it’s not what they currently show as their 3-Jaw

Have a look through the ‘Gallery’ and then [if you are sitting quietly] check the prices

Cowells is M14 so the larger Emco chucks won't fit, you may be OK with a Unimat 3

This is what the reversible jaws look like from the back (Emco 3 chuck)

I have one of those chucks myself. On mine, the jaws are reversible OK, just be careful about using them too extended as teeth on the reverse are quite small and easily broken if they are not all engaged.

Mine came with a Simat 101, back in the early 80s when they were being sold from Norfolk.
I think at the time, they were also offered by Cowells.

just looked at an old Cowells catalogue I have from the late 80s and it shows a very similar chuck to the OP's. they also show the type that uses two pins much like an emco. Neither are shown with additional jaws so assume they are reversible.

Tomorrow I will take some pictures and I will attach them, I have some more questions about the lathe
Please tell me how I can attach pictures in the topic, I tried, but I can't
