I have a number of collets bought in a job lot.

They are marked with various makers logos including Crawford and S&B.

The number that identifies them is 5159.

They are 2.5" long and the rear diameter is .937"

Does anyone know what they fit?

I may be up for some horse trading if they are any use to someone.

Also does anyone know why collet and collets flag as if they are spelling mistakes but are not corrected as part of a spell check?

      Regards.

      David.

              Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to find that.

Presumably they fit one of the model L headstocks.

              Many thanks.

              David.

Model L with PDH headstock. According to lathes.co.uk website this was a collet only headstock so it is probably quite rare and owners will already have the required collets.

imgp0949.jpgI have some of the S & B lathe specifications which list collets, and a drawing of a test bar for the Model A which shows the exact collet dimensions.imgp0948.jpg

                    Hi,

I have only just seen the last two replies.

Thanks for taking the time to dig out this information.

                    Regards.

                    David.

At the moment there are a number of accessories for Smart & Brown on ebay UK, at the hugely inflated prices wanted, it is no wonder that most of that stuff is just sitting there month after month unsold.

The same goes for Boxford items. One seller on Ebay bought an item from me and relisted it at more than 5 times the price he paid for it. It has now been sitting on Ebay for over a year. I did not know he was a dealer but when I saw the listing I knew the item from an identifying mark on it. As far as I am concerned the item is not worth anything like the listed price. Then again I suppose it is worth what someone is willing to pay. I always sold my spare Boxford items at a cost that made me a little and also helped someone to repair or better their lathe at a reasonable cost. I am afraid its dog eat dog these days for everything.

                        regards

Isn’t that simply the regular case of vendors looking for a mug. Nothing unusual. in that.

Well this then leads to the question of what is a fair price?

I would probably offer them as individual collets.

How much for an imperial and how much for a metric?

                              Regards.

I have a lot of collets for my model A although by no means a full set. I don't think I've paid more than £5 each for any of them; I haven't bought any for several years, so the going rate may have increased since then. In my experience, the metric collets are less commonly available than the imperial ones, and the square and hexagon collets are rarer still.

We have an incomplete set of collets at the museum, some of which had seen better days. I selected the poorest ones and put packing in the slots and bored them with my 6mm solid carbide Garant with Garant inserts. The inserts are like hens teeth and I had to pay the full price for original ones, but they are worth it. I bored collets to 5/16" , 3/8" , 1/2" and 5/8", plus 8, 10, 12 and 16mm. Using smaller Picco solid carbide boring tools, I also did 1/4" and 6mm. Despite the interrupted cuts and hard surfaces, the bores are pretty good and stock sizes run true better than 0.0001" tir.

I also have some of the external ring and cone stepped collets plus the opener / closers. There is one of the NOS cone collets on ebay for a reasonable price, unfortunately, it is identical to the other one I bought some time ago from the same vendor, or I would have snapped it up.

I would think trying an auction price starting at £9 each if selling individually, but some odd sizes will not be likely to sell. Or £7 each starting if they are sold in bundles, which would be more likely to get rid of them. I hardly ever use them, so I would not be interested.
