      Hi,

I have an interest in engineering and a while ago managed to pick up a Colchester 2000 lathe and Harrison mill. These are both installed and working in my garage. The Colchester is a later model, but without the foot brake

During this lockdown period I have decided to give them an overhaul

      Starting with the Colchester

Does anyone know the actual quantities of oil that should be in the gearbox? the oil glass is too cloudy to see. Headstock and apron are fine.

Has anyone serviced the manual oil plunger on the apron, can it be done without a total disassembly of the apron

I have the manual for it, but it doesn't go to this level of detail

      thanks Darren

If you have a look on youtube there are some rebuild's. Not sure if it covers oil amounts.

          Steve.

Thanks Steve, I’ve watched a couple now, no reference to volume, then decided to drain oil out of gearbox, it was about 2l worth. I was able to clean the glass and then refill with some iso 32 oil to the middle.

now for the apron oil plunger. Anyone taken one of these off or apart?

            Darren

I'm not sure if your lathe is listed here as it is a late model, but there are manuals available.

May I ask what you used to clean the oil sight glass?

Hi, sorry thought I'd replied to this. The glass was thick with grime on the outside, so just a clean. There is someone selling new ones on ebay if you are stuck.

Gave it a complete headstock, oil pipework and oil tank clean, then filled with new iso 32. oil is now crystal clean.

Also bought a new oil filter head and filter to fit inline, that should stop any circulating dirt getting to the headstock in future.

just the manual plunger to fix. I've heard i need to disconnect the feedsrcew and then pull the apron apart to get at the plunger.

Lets see what this week has install
