I don’t seem to have much luck finding arbors in a size I need, at least not at a reasonable price. Case in point, I’ve decided that a straight shank arbor would be most useful when I’m constantly switching between milling and drilling on my mill. I can leave the collet chuck in place and just pop a drill chuck in it. I have two spare keyless chucks. One has a JT2s taper and the other a B18. None of the usual suspects seem to have a 3/4” or 20mm straight shank arbor in this size? It looks like I’ll have to buy yet another chuck, this time with a straight shank on it.

Luckily not too expensive though. 😂

        Maybe pick up a Morse No3 arbor and turn it down;
JT2-½”  seem to be available, so you could also sleeve one up.

AliExpress has B18 to 20mm parallel. £11.09 when I looked.

Shop is ‘CNC Tool Shop’. Description is “1PCS Drill Sleeve C12 C16 C18 C20 B10 B12 B16 B18 Straight Shank Adapter Drill Chuck Arbor for CNC machine drill chuck”

Thanks for that I’ll have a look. 😉 Maybe worth a look on Temu as well.

I’ve been known to be swayed by shiny new kit. Unfortunately the flesh was weak on this occasion as well so I ended up ordering one of these …

Will do. I was thinking that I’d need to trim the shaft down on the one I first pictured. I’m not sure it will be necessary on the one I’ve ordered. I’ll have to see when it arrives.

Try finding 5/8″ parallel ones! (For my tailstock turret) Like rocking horse poo!

They’ve got several 5/8” shank ones in …….. America:

If you know someone with a lathe they could make you one.

Too late now you have bought the chuck but the Tormack TTS have nice short 3/4″ shanks. May even be able to find a knock off copy.

At $35 plus no doubt shipping, I hardly think that is a sensible buy. I suspect Vic’s purchase of a chuck plus arbour would work out cheaper.

I read the initial post as JT2S (i.e. short) taper. The Tormach one is JT2.

Another source for a 3/4″ short shank is an item used in a magnetic drills. But nothing in this area seems reasonably priced.

As I said there are quite a few Far Eastern knock offs of the TTS system which are cheaper if you go by the ER holders which are about 1/5th the price of the Tormack item. It gives another option to search for.

If you can arrange to get it accurately concentric, an MT3 arbor can be turned down in the lathe with a carbide insert. Should be able to get enough length of 5/8 or 16mm diameter.

Indeed. The complete with chuck with arbor was £23.39 including delivery.
More than I originally planned to spend but it looked so nice. Hopefully it will be ok when it gets here.

if you did want to make sensible use of your other existing chucks using C20 as your shank search will throw up quite a few parallel shanks as that is the code a lot of the far eastern stuff uses for a 20mm parallel shank. both your tapers here for less than half what you spent
