I own a 6" x 39" CQ6230 lathe and I would like to build Richard Smith's carbide tooling system as I have finally been able to use carbide tools successfully. There is only 28mm between top of the topslide and centre height From the photographs in issue248 it appears that the toolholder itself is about 20mm and the base plate about 15 mm I know that the pillar part is 25mm dia..To make this system for my lathe I would have to reduce thickness of the base plate to about 12mm and the toolholder to about the same. Has anyone out there had the same problem and would these sizes still be rigid enough
