Carbide Parting tool

I have just ruined my parting off tool blade type SGFH 26-3. I have a number of spare GTN 3 inserts so don't want to change types.

New blades can be quite expensive, but I have seen a brand new Sumitomo blade for not a lot of cash. However the designation is STFH 26-3.

Question: What is the difference between SGFH and STFH blades?

I've looked through the Sumitomo website and they state the insert for STFH is WCF. Is this the same as GTN types? (They look the same in the pictures!)

If my inserts are compatible with STFH I will go with that type of blade.

I contacted Sumitomo for their advice and they informed me:

Hello David

Re, your recent request regarding part off blades / inserts

99% of manufacturers parting is captive, which means only their inserts will fit their blades.

Sumitomo are currently offering a package of holders and inserts.

Please contact Paul at STS Tooling (Dublin) for more details

So, anyone with a similar dilemma now know the answer.

Looks like I will have to dig deep in the pocket for a blade to take GTN 3 inserts. There seem to be several manufacturers for these inserts, which would suggest that Sumitomo want to keep their system all to themselves.

I would say those are weasel words, pure and simple.

Sumitomo have not stated that there are inserts other than their own that will fit their holders (obviously, it isn't in their interest), but I would like to bet there are other suppliers' inserts that WILL fit.

What I do know is that the steel used by Sumitomo for the blade is far superior in comparison to the blade material used by others.

It was our intension to stock Sumitomo STFH 2603 blades, but the price was expensive, and at the time of consideration, the GTN3 inserts would not fit it, so that would have been a separate insert to consider specifically for the Sumitomo blade.

Bought my last parting blade here……..**LINK**…….very reasonable cost, looks like they do a 26mm GTN 3 compatible blade for £16 plus vat

Hi,

 

I've just started using ISCAR SGFH blades for GFN inserts in an ISCAR holder after a nice second hand deal.. I did not have a 2mm thick blade, so I just purchased one from JB cutting tools. Fits nicely. Takes the standard GFN-2 inserts. They also do 3mm and 4mm according to their website. Not quite as cheap as APT for the blade but it came with one insert included. Made in the UK and delivered in 24 hours.
