I want to make a new threaded bar for my tying vice, it has a disc on each end, one is fixed and can simply be pinned/glued, the other has to rotate but not fall off the bar, this end goes under the table and stays still whilst the bar rotates slightly as it is tightened.

What's the best way to do this? I'm thinking no thread/hollow piece on top of bar and knock it over, surely there must be a better way?

You don't mention the thread size, Paul … but I suspect it's fairly small.

          Options would appear to be:

          1. Replicate what's already there [which, as you noticed, is pretty horrible]
          2. Drill & Tap the end of the screw, and use a small countersunk screw [fixed with 'screwlock' retainer].
          3. Turn a reduced diameter on the end of the screw, and thread that … then make a thicker washer with a countersunk, or counterbored, hole and fit a suitable nut [again, fixed with 'screwlock' retainer].

            Thread is M10 x 1.5

Suggestion number 2 looks ideal, I have a bit for countersinking M3 cap screws.

            Thank you

It's not usual to put a spigot on the thread, use a dished plate and rivet over the end of the spigot.

I decided to go the whole hog and make a new C clamp and went with a Delrin pad and ball joint.
