I'm afraid it has become a necessary evil nowadays.

Certainly some interests are trying to make it that way. I tried to place an online order from a large local (Ontario) computer store chain recently. They demanded a cell-phone number in order to place the order. You couldn't fake it because they send a confirmation code by text which you have to plug in before you can proceed with the order.

…. and now I can't log in to my (20+ year-old) Paypal account unless I now give them a (verifiable) mobile number!. No alternative option Apparently modern life DEMANDS that you have a mobile and that you cede its number to the information miners.

This has been the case with my Paypal account for a long time. However, the F5 refresh button on the keyboard allows me to bypass the request and log in. I'm not giving Paypal my mobile number.

They've been asking me for years for a mobile number but always with a "not now" or "ask me later" escape button. This time there was no such button and refreshing didn't help.

I should add that I believe it was still possible to log on to approve a charge to the account, such as when making an online purchase. Just not to access the account itself.

            Sorry to hear this, Peter.

I must admit I've not logged into my Paypal account for several weeks, and when I did so just now they insisted on calling my landline "to confirm it's really you". There was no mention of them needing a mobile number.

The amusing thing is the landline in question isn't actually mine, so it's clearly not an infallible way of confirming that the "it" is really "me", or even who the "me" really is.

              .

No guarantee, Peter … but try this [it has worked several times for me]:

Follow the log-on process as far as that demand … then just close the page

Open a new page, and discover that you are actually ‘in’

              MichaelG.

              .

Note: It may, or may not, be relevant that I use an iPad

              _____

EDIT: __ Sorry, it looks like they have closed that loophole.

Well given that was the number on which you can be contacted suppiled by you it serves the purpose. Two factor identification greatly enhances your security and is very difficult to hack. I too find it irritating that life has to be complicated by the neccessity of all this but the blame lies with the criminals not with the service providers. If everyone was honest we could go back to leaving the doors unlocked. That sadly is not the world we live in.

                regards Martin

Bill – I didn't have the option of the landline …. it may be relevant that this was on the Canadian site (an adjunct to the US site as far as I can tell). Perhaps the UK site works a bit differently.

                  Michael – …..pity sad

Martin – even my bank will do two-factor identification by email or landline. It doesn't demand that I own (or purchase) a mobile in order to access my bank account. Paypal (Canada) gave me no such option ….mobile or you're SOL.

I do NOT give anybody my cell'phone number because I can't hear it ring. So anybody ringing me needs to use my landline telephone number.

If a site asks for a cell'phone number I enter the landline telephone number.

I can't think of any reason why any company would want a cell'phone number in preference to a landline telephone number.

I have four extensions around the house to my landline and another in the shed-workshop – so I'm much more likely to be able to answer that.

I want nothing to do with Paypal (because of "unsatisfactory" experiences in the past.

But Ebay will NOT let anybody sell on their system without a Paypal account.

I hope that you and your families are, and will remain, safe and well.

It's simpler for them to generate a confirmation code (for 2-factor ID) and text it to you – all done by computer – than it is to make a voice call …. even if the voice is computer generated.

I understand the need for security if, for example, one is making a purchase by Credit Card, but otherwise why collect the information.

I never give out my cell'phone number – I treat all incoming calls as suspicious.
