Serial numbers of the two lathes please.

Is this item sufficiently useful that I might want to add one to mine? Perhaps in aluminium to reduce flywheel effect, or would that actually be beneficial when using collets and no chuck mass to smooth things? The head is off at the moment so could machine the flat just in case.

      VSL 22461 A dates it as a '69.

I'd think iron and a flywheel effect is superior than aluminium and vise versa.

This could have been used to make splines on the lathe by locking the headstock and simply moving the saddle back and forth to cut the splines on a piece of round stock acting as a manual shaping machine. It would be possible to manually cut gears this way with the correct shaped cutting tool, the process is quite slow though and you need a very sharp cutting edge, small cuts!

Today I took another look at the Boxford lathe that turned up at our works a couple of weeks ago. The front of the lathe is up against a wall, and with other machinery and parts around the lathe it is difficult to get to,

But after clearing some of the clutter piled up on it I could then see it is in fact a VSL model, serial number is VSL 28024. So not a million miles away from the number on the lathe belonging to Thaiguzzi.image.jpg

5 odd thousand difference, so yeah will be a year or so younger. So it's a vari-speed? Also got the micrometer bed stop fitted, same as mine.

Went with a friend today to look at a Boxford lathe he was considering buying. The lathe was in poor shape and I advised against purchase. It did however have an indexing wheel as the main subject of this thread. Differing in style by having the division holes around the circumference and the indexing plunger on the top of the headstock. several other useful bits to pick over (a bereavement sale) a hand operated shaper and loads of garage mechanic tools. I came away with a nice height gauge and boxes of taps and dies.

                  Update.

Had an email back from Tony. He agrees it's more than likely factory fit, to special order.

He's added photos and a paragraph and link on the main Boxford lathe page under the accessories heading.
