I have to cut a full length key way in a metre long by thirteen millimetre piece of EN24 round bar. The cut isn't a problem, but I am concerned that the bar will bend horribly when the stress is relieved assymetricaly. Is there any way of stopping it, or correcting it? Thanks, So.

Depends upon the exact material spec. If it's EN24T then it's hardened and tempered so has already been stress relieved to some extent.

The late great John Stevenson showed us how to straighten a bent lead screw with a lever in his badgers workshop posts. So correcting any bend shouldn’t be too difficult, but it all depends on the exact material spec as Andrew says, and also the function of the part.

Cut another keyway on the oposite side.

Likely only need to cut the stressed skin of the shaft. Keith Fenner on utube manages t straighten bent shafts quite well. Likely others.

                    That’s not prevention, it’s recovery!
