Larger Chuck for ML7 Tailstock

Not had chance to do much machining of late but I'm back now, and thus have another probably daft question for you all!

I currently have a pretty bog standard keyed chuck in the tailstock of my ML7 and it does a fair amount of what I need it to do. Only slight problem is that it tops out at 10mm diameter. Could really do with one that would go to 13mm (or 1/2" ). I've recently found for sale on the 'Bay a Jacob 1/2" chuck with a 2MT taper, which I believe is the correct taper for a Myford. Does anyone know if this would fit an ML7? I'm sure with a bit of investigation I could answer this question for myself, but the sale ends fairly soon so any means of short cutting the learning process would certainly help!

If you have a 2mt taper you could also use ER collet chucks.ER32 for example will hold up to 20mm so can be used to hold milling and broaching cutters.

Have a look at the keyless chucks offered by RDG I bought a16mm one and find it excellent value, all my others are Albrecht or genuine British Jacobs. They do various sizes up to 3/4”

No connection to RDG other than a satisfied customer.

I have 3 tailstock chucks for my Boxford, 2 Jacobs 13mm (1 for a centre drill, the other for a drill bit or tap etc) plus a smaller precision chuck 0 – 6mm as the larger Jacobs will not grip drills much smaller than 0.8mm. You can't have too many as it is quicker to change the chuck than drills etc when you have to make a quantity of the same part.

A valid point Bob. Actually already have a second chuck in the form of a 0-6mm that came with the lathe. The addition of the 1/2" Jacobs should make a handy set.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I checked it out as I want one. The one I want is 0.6 – 8 with a 2MT arbour. £29.50 from RDG. On Ebay, Myford has what I guess is the same thing for £24.50 incl postage and you get it in a Myford box!

Not a genuine Jacobs and keyed as well as more than £25 with an arbor but I've always been pleased with this chuck…

I've always been hesitant with cheap keyless chucks in larger sizes auto overtightening and jamming up.

Nothing against keyless chucks in the right application – my cordless drill has one and a very useful bit of kit it is too. When it comes to the lathe, however, I must admit to coming over a bit old fashioned. Think I'd prefer to stick with keyed chucks for now.

Quality keyless work fine and last, what a pain keeping having to resort to picking up the key and continualyy winding to tighten a tool up, mean while 3 secs thats it.

If powering taps, on reverse grab hold of the chuck works 99% of the time.

An underestimated one for small stuff are Metabo, got two from 1992.
Last link above i only paid a fiver more for a Rohm 1-13 quick release brand new and no comparison to a cheapy. Rohm are used by Dewalt.

On the other hand could never tolerate spending on an Albrecht, but do have many Jacobs keyed to 3/4".

I <3 my keyless chuck, definitely much nicer to use than a keyed one. Has holes for a couple of bars if overtightened.

Just realised I never finished the story. The Jacobs chuck arrived, was exactly as described, fitted straight into my lathe, has thus far done everything asked of it and we’re all living happily ever after. If only everything was so simple! Thanks again to all who advised. Sure I’ll be back to pester you again soon.
