      I own a Unimat 3, it’s been attached to a 12mm wooden board with a 1.5mm steel covered base.

Looking though my stock I found an Aluminium plate 25mm thick. Would I gain much by cutting the plate to the size of the lathe and bolting them together?

Previously I’ve been pondering if bolting the lathe to an appropriately sized RSJ, but I have the aforementioned plate to hand and I do enjoy tinkering.

the one thing you would gain is the ability to adjust the bed for parallel turning but how long are your turned parts/

I doubt there is much to be gained, my U3 has been fixed to an offcut of “Contiboard” 15mm melamine-faced chipboard for the last 45years and has been pushed to its limits making things like a Stuart 10V.

If you are taking such heavy and/or deep cuts with your U3 that require it to be stiffened up then you are overdoing it.
