      HI,

      Have completed Eccentric Strap and duly split. Pump Eccentric Sheave duly turned and rotates happily in Split Strap. But how the xxxxxx does one now fit the sheave onto the completed crankshaft?? Happy Days. Geoff

        The trick is to cut a notch in the hornplate above the near side bearing hole just wide enough to clear the crankshaft diameter. You can then slip the pair of eccentrics and the pair of crankshaft gears onto the shaft. Poke the shaft through the offside hole and then the other end down through the notch and finally slip the bearings into place. You should just be able to see a bit of bronze bearing showing through the notch on my engine

          I slotted both hornplates from the top down, wide enough for the bearings to slide in (I made my bearings in one piece out of cast iron).

          This allows the complete crankshaft/eccentric/bearing assembly to be dropped in from the top – this makes it much easier less difficult to set the eccentric timing and connect everything up.

          I did it this way after seeing a full size engine (I forget what make) which had a similar arrangement, so I reckon it’s a legitimate solution.

            Thanks for that, but it’s getting the pump eccentric sheave onto the off-centred bit of rod (sorry for the technical terms!!) that sits in between the odd shaped bits on the crankshaft, not getting the crankshaft on between the side bearings … which I have achieved. To me it’s impossible without dismantling the crankshaft or somehow pulling its two bits apart. Geoff.

            PS: As you may have appreciated already I’m new to this game!

              The pump eccentric just slips onto the short end of the crankshaft. It does not go between the two webs, that is where the conrod goes and is why the conrod has a split bearing.

                  The off-centred bit is called the crankpin or big end journal, and the two odd shaped bits are the crankpin webs (there are probably other names in both cases, but I can’t bring any to mind just now*).

                   

                  *And whatever you call them, someone is sure to say ‘That’s wrong! They should be called…’
