        Hi All

Can anyone do or suggest an engineering company to machine some small parts for my 2 inch ruston proctor, i'm having many issues finding a trustworthy company or one that dosent try and rip me off with ridiculas prices.

id machine it all myself but getting acess to a milling ,achine is difficult now..im obvioulsy happy to pay and would like to send my work to someone who leeps in touch with progress and who is friendly along with it.

even if you don;t own a business but could help me, id still pay.

        thanks very much D

You might try searching "fast turnaround cnc parts" or look at protopart etc on the net – I was amazed at the price they quoted for a small part that was required for a project recently…

            Thanks Mark.

I will basically have castings to get finished off

              Hi Derek

I have seen this mans work,,,, Amazing a V12 fuel injected Aero engine. He gave a talk at the Melbourne Society experimental and Model engineers. I have no other connection. You could ask him if he is able to do the work. If the parts are smallish post should not be a problem.

Have you tried the couple of guys who run adverts in ME, not used them but they offer one off part sto completing engines. There was also one in the classifieds not long ago.

Ideally find someone local as these sorts of things really need fitting to the rest of the engine and certainly their mating part rather than just making to drawing.

                    Hi Derek,

I can recommend John Dunn Engineering, he advertises in the Model Engineer magazine.

                    Best regards,

                    Steve.

When judging prices, please bear in mind that it's not just their time you are paying for, but all the overheads of running a business and that Mr Osborne will be taking a hefty slice too!

Oh yeah I agree mate, and I know it's alot of effort to set the machines up. But £180 to machine me a brass bushing and £280 to add a slot to a gear!

My next purchase will be a mini milling machine so I can do more myself.

I'd translate that as = "I really don't want to do this job"

You'll find some companies don't want to take 'fiddling little jobs', possibly if in the past such a job has 'bitten' them when the customers expectations don't match their approach – unhappy for both parties. Hopefully some of the suggestions above will find someone who actually wants to do it, and make sure you specify tolerances etc. for any fits – or at least the parts it has to mate to, a bore and key to an exact British Standard are no good to you if it slops on your shaft, or won't go on!

Are there no local clubs in your area (not knowing where you are)

Are you putting a keyway into the bore of the gear, if so, what bore and what size keyway. I'm not far from you and have a good set of metric broaches. Can't help so much on imperial broaching though.

                                        Hi graham

That's very kind, to be honest I am needing to get a brass bush made for two of my gears, I brought these gears but the inner holes are wrong.

I needed them so decided not to send back to the company, once I've done that I will need to add a keyway onto the 2nd motion shaft and that gear.

Derek, from what I know of getting small parts machined up by an engineering company, your idea of getting a small milling machine could well be the cheaper way, I needed a small gear cut about five years ago, and was quoted $NZ200 +, I soon learned how to do it myself.

Hi Derek .There is a company near Tintagel that does CNC work ,good enough for F1 racing. I have asked him if he could help ."Only if there is a CAD print and drawing " Email at htp://www.longshores.co.uk The best I can do and hope this helps Maurice.

Exactly Lofty cnc is the wrong way to go being too expensive for small batch (100) and one offs, they just cant compete. Can be 8 times dearer.

Post some sizes up bet theres plenty on here that could undertake.
