Hi all.

My father gave me his workshop when he stopped ME, with it came a big pile of silver solder. I was trying to solder some steel the other night to fabricate a door hinge for a traction engine but found the solder was not really melting when the flux was. it more like a soft goo instead of flowing.

after a phone call to speak with dad he said it will be all mixed up! some hi and some low (easy flow) I'm wondering how i can tell whats what? some rods are a light straw colour and some are a darker straw colour. can anyone tell me what easyflow should look like colour wise and if high temp solder is lighter or darker in colour.

thanks for all your help. i'll have a go at some of the above tonight.

must be about £1000 worth of silver solder. i'm building a 4" Foster so no need for a copper boiler just fabrication.

still learning allot the only other model i've made is a stuart S50. but i'm making all the patterns for the Foster myself and have had some cast that came out great.
