Hi all, just gone out on a limb and got myself a cl500m lathe/mill combo.

Love em or hate em, its what i have

Now i have been looking for a course or something to learn the basics, i cant find anything in my area. I have no mountain of money, in fact, i borrowed the money for the machine!

Anybody around the area of Billinghay or Heckington in Lincolnshire that has any knowledge they would like to share please contact me.

Im 49 coming on 12 love motorbikes and try to be honest and respectful to all. Married 30 years with a bunch of kids n grandkids, so any excuse to get out is great. Really want to learn how to just do stuff for fun and maybe make a bit of my investment back.

Anyway PM if your in area and i will send all my contact details.

          HI Richard,

I'm way west of you, but ask any questions, no matter how trivial you think they are, and folks here will try to help.

            Hi Richard

You're about 44 miles south of me (Scunthorpe) but the same age (well I will be next Wednesday) with the same interest (motorbikes)

I started on the same path in 2009 buying a 1947 Barker lathe followed by a Chester Champion mill/drill and then an Elliott shaper

If you like I could ride over and have a chat over a cuppa and I'll run you through the basics that I have learnt

I bought the two "Complete Course" Harold Hall books for Lathework and Milling which are really good for getting you started

You would be welcome to borrow them

            John

Thanks John, nice offer… My main problem is i have no tools with my kit, well i have a few very basic tools. I have a great list, i'm sure we all do, convincing the wife that its a great idea is not so easy.

At the moment it is squeezed into a 1.5 x 1.5 meter space, awaiting a new workshop build! Getting something with enough room for a bike or two and a few big boys toys.

I am more than willing and able to travel if i get the oppertunity to watch somebody who knows the way round a machine…. That will maybe give me a better idea on the order in which to purchase large list of tools, add ons ect. i might even learn to make some.

If its possible for me to travel to you.. send address in message or contact number and we can arrange something.. be bad to get you to travel all way here to write a list of what i havn't got lol.

I've got a 1998 ZX9R needs a bit of tlc, but gotta wait for my workshop to be built! She's taxed, tested and insured and scary as hell, any excuse to get out is a good one

My road bike is now an Africa Twin but I still have the 1999 ZX7R I stopped road riding last year plus a chinese GY200. The ZX7R will be getting a ZX14 front end (triple tree, forks, brakes) and ZX10R swingarm which is why I need the engineering machines.

I'll PM you my details so we can sort something out

                John

                  Hi Littlerick,

Welcome to the forum, I started out with one of these & there isn't a lot wrong with it as a starters machine, like you I slowly built up my tool collection so don't panic, things will come. I'm too far north (Teesside) to get down but if I can offer any advice I'm more then pleased to so just drop me a pm if you need any info/advice.

If you go back through the forum posts you will see that a couple of members have just got the same machine these past couple of weeks … from about the 2nd Sept on. you will find a lot of info in these.

                  Cheers

                  George

Thanks John for comments re my books

You are in good company Littlerick as there are still many who do their milling on the lathe, as I know from the correspondence I receive. Many of which are in their early metalworking days.

Whilst they are not for the combo form of lathe/milling machines there are some pages on my website that you may find of interest, maybe helpful.

**LINK** This deals generally with milling on the lathe.

**LINK** This page is one of the index pages and lists a number of projects for the lathe only workshop. whilst you may not want to make any of the projects viewing the setups, etc. may be helpful.
