      Hi,
I am making a 1″ Casel steam traction engine, using a Rudy Kouhoupt book and in the process of making the cylinder and piston. The piston has a groove for packing, but I do not know what to use and also there is no mention of what suffing to use for the stuffing box. I would appreciate any help.
      Thanks Ted

You have a couple of options,

The traditional one is Graphite impregnated yarn which you can get from most of the usual ME suppliers.

The modern equivalent is PTFE gland packing, again from your ME suppliers.
Both come in a few sizes to suit your groove and the yarn can be unwound to produce thinner strings which will do the glands as well. Gland packing can also be done by taking several lengths of plumbers PTFE tape and rolling into a string which can then be wound around the rod.

There is a good build of Rudy’s Tractor on HMEM
