Does anyone know of a design for a vertical boiler about 6" dia and preferably top-firing?

I'm building an own-design model of a Sentinel shunting loco in 7.25" gauge.

        Dave.

Reeves do or did a 6" vertical boiler design, but bottom firing. Noel

greetings Dave, have a look at K N Harris's book "Model Boilers and Boilermaking", which has several designs for vertical boilers, and I think Martin Evans did one designed for injector testing. published in ME, a while ago.

            Regards

It might be worth looking up the steam tractor designed by John Haining and published in ME back in the 90s.. Verticle boiler but not sure of the firing. Noel.

Could you produce a smaller version, suitably modified, of the Sentinel boiler?

It was reckoned to be a very effective and efficient steam raiser.

The original design was intended to provide ease of maintenance.

Thanks for the suggestions. There is a 5" gauge Sentinel design called Sirena in Model Engineer in the early 60's, so I could scale that up, but I guess I'm looking for something requiring minimal modification as the boiler tester I'd have to work with never seems keen on any sort of changes to boiler designs.

There's also the boiler of the 2" scale Clayton wagon design. In theory my loco is about 2" scale too, but the Clayton boiler seems very small compared to the loco.

                  Dave.

There is the 3” Ray Prime Atkinson waggon as supplied by Reeves which would be a fair bit larger than the 2” Clayton, don’t think it top fired though.

The calculations for a boiler are fairly easy and if your boiler inspector is not willing to accept nornal practice I would consider joining a club where the inspector is properly able to fill his role – and understands it ! I also had a boiler inspector who thought he knew better than published designes – I left the club ! Noel
