I have never made a model from CI castings before but I am about to start my first one. Some of the castings will need to be painted and I would like to aim for a finish as good as powder coating. However, for reasons which I will not go into I would prefer NOT to use powder coating.

Could someone briefly outline the process they have used on their model as it will surely help.

These castings are fairly rough so after fettling off the mould box "fringes" I am intending smoothing the sand textured surfaces with one of those emery flap wheels in an electric drill but again, if you have a better idea advice will be appreciated.

The late Denis Chaddock went into the process in some detail in his book about the Quorn. I could email an extract to you.

For what it is worth, I do not share the current general enthusiasm for powder coating either.

After the initial fettling, it can be helpful to apply an initial coat of primer before machining which seems to make for a cleaner job.

EGA – thanks for your offer, would be gratefully accepted. Thanks to JasonB for that very helpful link and John Bogs, your helpful advice is much appreciated.

I've only painted one model built using castings, which was the Stuart Victoria. I chose to use Halfords spray primer (grey) and I think it was Vauxhall Pine Green + a gloss black.

I used abrasive tape 80 and 400 grade to get the castings smooth, and then sprayed two coats of grey primer. A week later when I could be sure the primer had hardened off I filled any remaining dinks with cellulose stopper. I then used wet & dry to rub down the piece and repeated the spraying and filling until the finish was at the standard I wanted. Final coat of primer, then I applied a coat of colour. Once that had hardened off (the following weekend) I gently rubbed down any bumps and bits without penetrating the primer coat. Couple of coats of colour and all is done.

The paintwork is four years old and is still good. But it is just on a shelf in my office, not standing any weather.

Last year when I rebuilt a Stuart S9, I used files, and emery cloth, and the Dremel to clean up the castings. I used a brush on etch primer, then some Green Enamel paint that had been lying around the workshop for a great many years, rubbed down with wet and dry paper between coats, about 4 or 5. The Black bits (Cladding) were spray painted with cheap satin paint (Warehouse). I degreased the castings by putting it through the dish washer after I had got the rough dirt off, it had been stored for many years until my friend rescued it from the scrap man(scrap man got the boiler(thank goodness)).
