I need some advice in how to design a boiler. My plan is to build a vertical boiler for a 5inch gauge class C53 tram engine. Although there is a horizontal boiler in a C35, I thought it would make it easier to build in a vertical boiler as I am a novice to model engineering. I am going to be building this with a family friend who has made many live steam models. I know it would be easier to find a design that has already been created, but I would like to give myself a challenge.

I have already drawn out a prototype boiler. The plan for the prototype boiler is to be 130mm diameter and a height of 200mm. The height does not include the length for the chimney. The fire box will be 90mm diameter and 70mm long. The fire tubes will be 10mm diameter and 100mm long and the smoke box will be 30mm long on the end. I need some advice on the calculations that I need to make and the equations for them.

If anyone can help it will be appreciated 😀

          Hi Toby,

Have you read "Model Boilers and Boilermaking" by K.N. Harris? It should answer most of your questions I guess. If you can't buy it, may be your local library can let you loan one.

Toby – have a look and see if you can locate drawings of Robin Dyer's Clayton Steam Wagon boiler. That will give you some pointers.

Toby – you need to do quite a lot of reading and learning before embarking on the boiler, otherwise it simply wont steam. PM me if you have specific questions.

If you have access to old ME's then put "boiler design" in here and do some research
