I would like to wind a couple of turns of 3" tubing around a 10" diameter former. Its for a vacuum cleaner experiment. The "tubing" needs to have a relatively smooth inner surface and be relative lightweight – 1 mm thick plastic?. Clearly filling a piece of copper pipe with lead and actually bending it is out of the question, so I am toying with the idea with vacuum forming something or moulding it with glassfibre. But have come to a full stop with constructing a former, I have been considering making sections of 45 degrees, inner and outer half tubes, so I could bond sixteen of them to gather to make the final two turns. but even to make these small formers or moulds seems to be very problematic. Any ideas? Just had an idea, I shall to go out side and try to manipulate some pipe insulation to see if I can do it in one go.!

Wood formers are widely used for vac forming commercially. For long production runs wood can be coated with epoxy for durability.

Might work for you, certainly wood is not too expensive for experimental work.

Possibilities I can think of:

– This would be a great project for a 3D printer to tackle but it would have to be a large footprint, ~16" across.

– Use some preformed drain-pipe bends and fabricate from those.

– There is a flexible hose of varying diameters used for drainage at the base of retaining walls (I've used some here at home). But this is ribbed and has perforations to allow the ingress of water. It would easily bend to the required shape but you'd have to figure out a way of adding a smooth surface and blocking the holes.

Hi Frank ,How about blowing up a wheel barrow inner tube and covering with glass fibre ,alow to dry let down tube and cut apart to free tube. .have done this with cement

A few ideas that might give some food for thought:

Have you investigated flexible conduit as a possibility?

Or flexible air duct?

Hose for vacuum cleaners seems to come in a variety of sizes as well, might not be all that smooth though, does it go that big?

Find your local custom exhaust fabricators they should be able to do it on a mandrel bender in 1.5mm wall tube.
