Thank you for posting this reality check.

It has been a great informative thread about your nightmare journey, which I'm confident has been experienced by others as well. The rebuild should really be a forum topic to enlighten anyone as to what more than likely can be expected when buying imported equipment; but then, it might not be received well by some forum advertisers, so in all probability will be hidden away in the back corner of forum threads like this.

I commend and appreciate your efforts in rebuilding this lathe, and hope others take the time to read your posts, and also note that old equipment such as your Brown & Sharp lathe has put to shame the newer import lathe.

Strangely enough the posters name doesn't even appear above the picture on my browser?

And yes, you do need to view the comments link posted kindly by Bazyle to make sense of it as the picture alone doesn't tell you anything.

Ps. having reviewed what I can see of the album, i'm not really convinced of some aspects of this post..?

Forgive my having a total blonde moment, but somehow this thread makes no sense to me. I have a title “rebuilt nightmare” , a photo of a Warco lathe and a comment by Mike E. about an informative thread. What thread.? Am I missing something? Any help appreciated.

That may be apparent to those who have access to every input to the forum but is basically unhelpful.

Maybe he doesn't have a high pain threshold? Who knows!

Maybe he expected perfection forcfourpence halfpenny? Who knows!

Maybe any rebuild is a nightmare to him? Whk knows!

Until we know just a tad more than a title and a picture, lets just pass it by?

Hi,

Two thoughts… Firstly well done for seeing this through and coming out the other side still sane. Second of all with the skills you have exhibited why did you not consider an older western machine that may need some TLC rather than a Chinese import?

Or just use the chinese import out of the box and make something, worked OK for me with only a couple of minor issues in 8 years of use. Just as likely that a buyer may be as lucky as me

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense to me either ?

I was replying "directly" to Lathejack after reading all the posts about his new lathe while looking at his album, yet afterwards I noticed my post come up as a new thread ? I don't intend this post to stir up any issues. His recount of the problems encountered reflect my views and experience with imports as well; others mileage may vary. My post was an acknowledgement to Lathejack regarding his efforts.

Yes the thread is a mess, but I doubt that was intentional.

For the sake of eveyone's sanity; could those who don't understand please read the following [directly quoted from the caption under Lathejack's album photo that I linked earlier.

Any thread created from a comment about a photo will go to 3D printers etc as default if a forum topic is not selected. The list that comes up is numbers followed by alphabetical so 3D comes first

I'll move it now to workshop tooling.

May also be useful if Lathejack sees this and clarifies a little. I'm not sure he meant that series of photos to be used as a universal cudgel for all imported kit.

This was a very interesting series of photos with comments that might not otherwise have come to my notice. so thanks to both lathejack and Mike.

It is a quirk of the forum software that if someone (other than originator) comments on a photo it throws up a new thread. For many who use the 'latest posts' function this just looks like a regular post which can be funny as it appears to start mid stream. I did link to the album but not everyone cottoned on to that. Live and learn.

For those with an interest in checking and improving their Chinese lathes many of which have similar but not identical aprons see this thread by Ouballie. By the way that's a link to an album of photos with captions. He also started a thread on it

I do wish Lathejack would turn up.

Looking at his past posts over the years he has pointed out that he has many far-eastern items he's happy with, at least one of which was a welder that replaced an Italian one.

The lathe in question is, apparently, over ten years old – so not a recent machine. The faults were virtually all down to careless assembly. He has pointed out that the (rusty) Chinese bearings were otherwise superior to the German ones he replaced them with and that the geared head actually runs quieter than some belted lathes. So it isn't the one-sided story it may seem from a superficial skim.

I'm glad I hadn't seen this old thread before buying a Warco: it might have put me off a fascinating hobby.

As it is, I just went out and bought stuff. I've learned loads and thoroughly enjoyed making things myself that work.

Lathejack wrote about his experience. I can only say that the Chinese equipment I've owned has been both fit for purpose and value for money. Not perfect, not tool-room accurate, not industrial quality, but certainly not rubbish either. It all worked 'out of the box' and it all benefited from mild fettling. Above all it was affordable, and came from a Supplier who would support me in the event that I got a lemon.

If you are interested in the hobby, get on with it. I did and have no regrets.

Current list price for this lathe is £3860. Theres a Holbrook C on the usual place at £103 at the mo – just saying.
