I am ready to make my first Tich smokebox, the brass materials available will be slightly loose to the boiler O/D therefore NG. I have a short piece of copper tube which is suitable.

Is there any reason I should not use it?

      Thanks Ron

Can I use copper tube instead of brass?

          Hello Ron,

Provided the tube isn't soft then by all means use it, although be careful and support it well when drilling it etc. On a couple of my locomotives I have used copper tube without any problems and at present I'm refurbishing a big ugly 5" gauge atlantic that has a copper smokebox and thats probably seventy or more years old.

          Regards,

            Ron,

You could also wrap a strip of brass round the boiler to form a spacer ring between the outside diameter of the boiler and the inside bore of your brass tube. I plant to do a similar spacer ring for my Northumbrian.

Ron, can I ask you to change your user name so it does not show your e-mail, one it will save it hiding text and two will stop you getting spam and as we all know spam tins don't make a good smokebox.

Depending on how big teh brass tube is you could also run a slitting sawe along it and silver solder back together, put the joint at the bottom and it won't show.
