Can anyone tell me the width of the dovetail on the ML7 cross slide ?

I have a Hobson ML7 copy and the cross slide looks identical

the hobson cross slide is damaged

It is not the same size as my power cross feed super 7

Are the dovetail`s on the early super 7 and ml7 the same ?

      thank-you

      Rob

          Rob,

Can't tell you the width of the cross-slide just now, can have a look tomorrow. The Super 7 s and the ML7s are different, the Super 7 is wider to accommodate the much wider gib strip.

Thanks Robbo, the Hobson major width is just under 2-1/4", I would really appreciate it if you could measure yours

            thanks

A quick measure with a vernier caliper shows

Inside width to V points is 2.3" or 58.25mm

Outside width is 1.95" or 50mm – outside refers to that which rests on the saddle.

The depth of the vee (vertical, not the slope) is 0.375" or 9.75mm

The gib strip is 3mm thick

Sod's Law says that they will be almost the same, but not quite!

I you want to try an old ML7 cross-slide, send me a message, but they are heavy so postage will be a lot. I have a couple "under the bench".

Worth a mention, The Super 7 cross slide (or certainly my 1953 vintage machine) has just one dovetail and one plain machined side. The Gib strip (split in 2 halves) forms the other half of the dovetail.

If your "making it fit" then the Super 7 cross slide with custom gib strips could offer much greater flexibility.

This is the same as mine, you can see how one side of the cross slide is machined flat, and the gib is a rather large affair and forms the other half of the angle, (secured through the top of the slide, after being adjusted via the side screws in the normal way)

My ML7R has the pre PCF super 7 saddle fitted with the ML7 cross slide, as far as I know the super 7 cross slide fits straight on so the saddle dovetail must be the same although the design and width of the cross slides is different.

Thank you so much for the reply`s guys !

I think from the measurements Robbo provided that it is the the same size as as ML7,

I have uploaded some photographs to photobucket so you can see the item in question

Robbo, I may take you up on the offer of the ml7 slide to try

I only bought this machine to get the myford gearbox off it for my super7, but now I have had a play around with it, I have decided to keep the gearbox on it and use the machine.

The geared head is a fantastic job ! It would be a great project to copy and adapt it to suit the Myford !

And the spindle bore will pass 3/4" and has a #3 taper, I like the tailstock too, it has a huge amount of travel in the ram.

If I can confirm that the ML7 or super cross slide will fit, I would buy a long type

Is the ML7 cross slide feed screw 3/8" ?

Looking again at my power feed super 7, I see that the dovetail dimensions are actually smaller, also as the gib is so chunky, it places the righthand slide surface a good 1/2″ to the right of the dovetail, so a super 7 cross slide will not fit the hobson, as this area is rough cast and lower, looks like a ML7 slide is the way to go,

                        Rob,

The Imperial feedscrew is 3/8" x 10tpi. Acme thread. Don't know metric, but similar dia presumably.
