WM250V _F help required

Hi,

Can anyone explain to me how I change the belt position to get from fast to slow. My manual is a very poor photocopy and the photos are dark.

I have slackened the two cap head bolts on the mounting plate but can't get the longer belt of the two over the pulleys in the way I think the photo suggests..

Is their more adjustment on the mounting plate or should I have a longer belt?

Warco have over the years had several different arrangements of the belts on the 250 lathe, if you can post a photo it will help in identifying which set up you have and therefore get you the right advice.

Hi Brian; it dependson the way the drive is arranged on your version, my WM 250V-F has only one drive belt, from the sounds of it you have the latest version, a couple of pics from my manual if it helps… A couple of pics of yours would help.

The lathe is about 18 months old. I have downloaded that manual but the drive arrangement is totally different. I have taken a photo and it's in my album. Just got to work out how to put it on the thread

Belt is wrong side of tension pulley but that's how it was.

Can't help you any further on that one Brian, looks like possibly a 240/280/290 version badged as a 250V-F, maybe one of those owners could help.

According to manual longer belt should go over small top pulley on left hand side and large pulley on spindle but it's too tight. The small belt fits on bottom motor pulley and large diameter left hand top pulley but I think that's ok

Its the inverter version I think

You need to slide the plate to the front of the lathe, as it is shown at the moment it is fully back.

Once set right you should be able to rotate the pully by hand an derail the belt into the other grooves.

Hi Jason,

I have already slackened the two bolts but it only moves half an inch. I can take the belt off from the old position I. E. High speed but can't get it on in new Position? The tension pulley is only for high speed position. I think it was supplied with wrong belt and was fitted with tension roller on wrong side. Belt is a good inch too short

Looks very like the pulley arrangement on my 280.

Two different belts are used to change speed, the longer for high speed, the short one for the low range.

This photo shows the fast position – I agree that Brian's jockey wheel is on the wrong side of his belt. On my lathe slackening the bolt on the jockey mount allows the jockey wheel to be adjusted. The bolt head is just visible in the photo.

This photo shows the slow speed set-up. The long fast belt has been removed and the short slow belt fitted to the other pulley pair. The manual says not to use the jockey to tension the belt. I'm not entirely convinced but It works without it!

With the jockey out of the way it's quite easy to pop the belts on and off by twisting them at the edge of the big pulley whilst hand turning the chuck.

This is a big help. Almost the same setup as mine. The fast speed I have no problem with slow speed belt is far to tight to get on the larger pulley on the spindle. It only just goes over the smaller one

Silly old duffer do you use the same two belts for fast and slow? The shorter one going over the intermediate pulley and the spindle. The longer belt over the motor pulley and the intermediate one?

Hi Brian,

Yes, but not at the same time, if I understood your question properly.

There are actually three belts in total, but only two are used to change speed.

On the left hand side of the picture there's a big pulley directly above a smaller one (which is on the motor). The belt between them is never moved.

The fast and slow belts are never fitted at the same time.

The fast belt connects the motor directly to the spindle as shown in the top picture.

With the fast belt removed. the slow belt is mounted to drive the spindle from the top left pulley as in the second picture.

On my lathe the slow belt is smaller than the fast belt.

Harder to describe in words than I expected. Feel free to ask again if I'm not being clear. (If we were stood in front of the lathe together it would take a few seconds to demonstrate. )

Perhaps that's what it's meant to do? The minimum speeds on my 280 are 30rpm (slow) and 150rpm (fast), so there's a 3:1 ratio between the two. I believe there's variation in the fast/slow ratio between models and dates, possibly your lathe is a 2:1?

Or could it be that your slow belt is the wrong size?

Problem now sorted I think. I only have two belts, the slow one is missing. The manual never mentions a third belt so I had assumed you just used the same two belts. Tried to order one from warco but no one answered the phone .

Ordered 3 belts of evil bay for less than a tenner so I have spares as well. Promised for Thursday so I will be able to carry on then.
