Hello all,

I assume that this is some forms of grease nipple? Is that right and what tool do I need for it? I have noticed that there are boxford grease guns, is it unique to boxford?

Looks like an oiling point to me, use regular light machine oil of around SAE30.

Another daft question, what do I use to get the oil pasted the BB? Sorry for the daft questions but all this is new to me.

if you use an oil can with a nozzle, press the nozzle onto the bearing as you pump. The oil is forced past the bearing into the relevant place. As you remove the oil can the bearing seals the oiler from swarf etc.

Thank you Chris and Ian, will have to invest in an oil can now. Had one for years and never needed it, gave it away and now need one. An excuse to wonder the boot sales.

Definitely an "old-fashioned" flat oil nipple. I used an oil gun (like a small grease gun in appearance) with a pointed nozzle which pushed the ball down and sealed on the sides of the resulting hole.

Then I changed the old style nipples for more modern ones that look like grease nipples. A different nozzle has more of a sealing area and the pressure of the oil pushes the ball down.

The oil gun I bought from someone on ebay came with both types of nozzle.

But an ordinary lever oil can will do if it presses on the ball and seals in the hole.

My 2yo Sieg C6 has those sprung ball oilers, pain the neck they are as they are all different sizes so need several size of nozzle on the oil can, plus if they have become stuck in the depressed position there's no easy way to 'un-stuck' them save pulling the machine apart. Also some of them are positioned where they are hard to get clean of swarf and fine dust before oiling. In addition, you have no idea of whether the oil is going in to where it's needed. And there's about 15 of them to do every time i oil around.

Been looking at some oil nipples, think I may go down the same route. Thank you. Seen some m6 ones that may fit, I have not removed the old one to measure up.

I like to keep my machines clean, although a bit of oil will not do any harm, I don't want it all over the place.

I have worked on a good few older vehicles and finding and filling the grease nipples can be a royal. If I had as many as that on mine, to which I am not sure if I do, I would consider a piped drip oiler. Lol. Done in the flick of a switch. Lol. Thank you for sharing your experience. This is the part of the forum I like.

Thank you, I am considering upgrading the nipples to the ones I know, the grease style ones. Thank you for that, I now know what I am looking for should I stay with the current ones.
