What sort of Gear do I need?

I'm building some small motorised models and Im looking for a cost effective motor solution. Ive found these online, which are temptingly small (and cheap), but Ive never seen model motors that have this cross shaped shaft. I've looked for model gears that that fit, but Ive only seen round and 'D' shaped.

Any ideas?

Looks like the cross shape and the black part behind it are not really part of the motor. The metal "can" is basically the motor that I suspect has a round shaft comming out of it. Question is can the other bits be easily removed.

The biggest maker of small electric motors on the planet is Johnson, of China. Try their website. Also try Technobots, for a good range of cheap motors. (Usual disclaimer)

As Jason observes … The end section looks like an add-on gearbox [or possibly a clutch].

Is the output speed specified ?

If they're cheap; buy a couple and do a 'teardown' to discover what's inside.

In my heli flying days i bought some stuff from hobbyking.. they have a range of motors from tinier brushed stuff all the way to brushless with a few HP and do gearboxes etc. Best value on there used to be their wires and heatshrink.

MFA (como drills) are just down the road from me, lots of motors and gearboxes…..

Also look at model boat suppliers then on their website search for motors

also try robotics suppliers.

When you have bought a motor come back and ask how to fit the gear explaining what equipment you have to get some advice on how to make the hole the right size and in the middle.
