Today's activity? – trying to identify a strip of road to the Highways Dept. Their reference map appears to date from the 80s … the 1880s! Success eventually but it was hard work. Why bother? local road recently resurfaced – VERY smart with new centre lines and 'cat's eyes'. Admired on the outbound leg but something didn't seem right on the return. Then it clicked – the 'cat's eyes' had been installed 90degs out!!surprise How can anyone do that? Percy Shaw would be rotating at max revs, I fancy!!

Someone's got a bit of digging to do!

As for activity up here in Warwickshire, It being the first day with bearable temperatures for what seems like a month, I concreted up the walls of the last of four little raised beds for growing vegetables in the back garden. Did the other three over a year ago! Then I came inside and started assembling a ShumaTech DRO-550 that I've had waiting under the bench for about six years. At this rate I might even start on the Quorn castings before I go to my maker. laugh

          Steady there Mark.

Those castings are for looking at, not machining.

That said, mine have now transitioned to such a high shelf that I can't even get to look at them any more. Still they are in two nicely labelled boxes so at least I can read the labels from time to time and contemplate further action.

Just a quick note of thanks for the replies.

Bazyle, as a rank beginner I thought I'd got the rights of creeping up to a "warm fit". I have to go by what I read and see, having no background experience to guide me.

I set the topside at 7.5 degrees so that each division on the paper scale advanced the tool by a tenth relative to the lathe axis as opposed to .001" if the topside was square on. I applied the actual cut using the leadscrew hand wheel having first made an undercut in the spigot to ensure I didn't get a rounded bottom corner.

Secretly I'm dead chuffed with the result; the backplate is an interference fit on the chuck and when truly home will support the weight of the chuck body without any through bolts, but it's not so tight that it can't be tapped off with a wooden dowel and a pin hammer.

Sunday actually, went to the Duncomb park steam rally nice day, not too sunny but still very warm. I digress, lots of traction engines from full scale down to minis. Had a look around trade stalls, usual local market stall type re, tooling apart from one that dealt with machine tooling, bought a couple of small pieces that were needed… left & right hand indexible tip tool, 3 spare DCMT tips, a pair of coarse straight knurl wheels, plus a set of BA spanners that I've been looking for for some time, looks to be plasma / water / laser jet cut…

              Helmsley buy 2018.jpg

There were a lot of boxes of cutters / tips but the majority looked like seconds or too worn to be of any use, par for the course I s'pose but a nice day non the less.

Had a go at making Will Doggets height gauge using a caliper gauge not required.. see MEW iss 235 p68.

I milled the finger grip flutes with the Dore Westbury set over at an angle as I don't have a round nosed cutter.. below..

Just had to do a quick repair on my spec's, very fine bore copper pipe and Loctite, saved myself a few pounds it will do the job until next eye test, I may get a green mark on the bridge of my nose but so what cool Mike.

I made the same repair to my eye crutches and my optician complemented me on the repair. It wasn't totally satisfactory as the broken bar still swivelled in the sleeve. I didn't think of loctite, you could lacquer the sleeve if you do get any marks.

When I was a student I made repair legs for my glasses by soldering some coat hanger wire to the frames after the hinges failed. Worked well until one evening in a nightclub, when a female participant removed them, folded them and put them in my shirt pocket. The relationship didn't progress beyond that point. In those days I had better things to spend my money on than glasses.

Was looking at videos that I'd taken of Duncomb park steam rally yesterday & as per usual I'd turned the phone camera to horizontal … result was trying to look at horizontal video at 90* to the norm' we've all done it & I have raised the question as well as many others… how do we get it the right way to view ?. Did a quick question on Google … 'how to rotate videos'… search came up with the following nice easy app, which I down loaded & used, it is easy ! My system checked it out with my antivirus app ( Kaspersky 2018 ) nothing untoward found, but , I will apply usual disclaimer should you wish to try it out. Give it a go if you wish, one of the easiest apps I've seen.

Many years ago the opticians' rip-off tactics were exposed on a BBC TV 'expose'. It brought about a partial improvement but one of the programme interviewees was a senior consultant at Moorfields and he was asked where he obtained his glasses – "Algeria", he said, "at 30/- a pair"! (yes, pre-decimal). I have just one pair of prescription glasses – half-eyes, courtesy of the RAF aircrew optician in Harley St. It is the second pair, the first were thrown away as being dangerously distorting. I now use cheapo reading glasses and have pairs scattered around house, car and workshop, so mislaying them is no problem!

Took a flight with my mum over central London in a DH Dragon Rapide from Duxford. teeth 2

Third time lucky due to previous weather related cancellations. Even the flight today was delayed by an hour due to low cloud. Here's the aircraft:

Back in the 70’s, during my time in the Air Force, our transport squadron was detached to India and Bangladesh under the UN to ferry refugees, all the lads who wore specs had new glasses made while they were in Calcutta as they were phenomally cheaper than in the UK, methinks the situation is much the same now.

Given that you can get one pair for as little as £25 and 2 pairs of socially acceptable specs for £70 at Specsavers these days (those prices include "thin" ie high refractive index lenses), things could be a lot worse – and wrinklies get another 25% off if they can prove they are over 60. We were paying several hundred dollars each when we lived in Canada and when I was young in the UK, every pair of glasses I broke seemed to cost an arm and several legs (not mine though!).
