Perhaps time to fly a large gas balloon for advertising,' No Flying here'. I used to live under the flight path of Racing fans who would fly by Helicopter to Silverstone on racing days and it was Blxxdy noisy and the dog hated it and would stand looking up at them.

In Kenya I lived alongside Wilson Airport and on certain days when the wind was in the right direction they would take off over the house and it made the windows rattle.

Here is a treat for Neil & Norman, and anyone else amused by 'palindromic numbers'

        … I think this one qualifies as a hyper-palindrome !!

Does one not need planning permission for advertising blimps?

Plus they probably have a serious attraction for aero modelers. I used to fly at a disused second world war airfield that had hundreds of acres of ploughed fields round it & just a single 15 ft diameter tower remaining from the control tower of old. Every 3 weeks on average someone would manage to fly into it !!!

I'm not too far away from that on my beloved Saab (which I've had from new and in which I've obsessively persued those palindromic moments !) It is currently over the 100k mark and is away with No2 son who is with us from Australia for a holiday. I just hope that he returns it before the 111111 clocks up ! (I also hope that he puts some fuel in it,)

As a small boy I lived 500m from the end of RAF Leeming runway, Javelins were the resident aircraft at that time. Could be noisy at times.

A few years back a nephew moved from NZ to Brisbane, he took his RC hydroplane to the local boat pond, and soon got told"you can't run that here, the boat has a 10 cc glow motor, local regs only allow electric or other silent power.

                Ian S C

Same in Canada, or certainly British Columbia. I foolishly took a small glowplug engine when we moved there and it was a major task finding anywhere that even stocked the fuel. They only seem to use electric – no idea if that was mandated or driven by commercial or social interests.

Getting ready for Sundays attempt at Kingsbury just welded another section of stainless tube in burst generator.

Checking for leaks on new manifold etc. with soapy water after using the engine as a compressor rotating it with an electric drill via the propshaft.

Everything seems leak free but proof of the pudding will be when the high temperature steam is cooking. Next job to place tubing in generator insulation cases and check the burner jets.

I used to live under the flight path for RAAF Edinburgh in South Australia. At the time the RAAF were flying F111s and Mirages. Often they would fly in the evenings and either aircraft flying over at about 200 feet with reheat was almost visceral. I loved it!!

                        cheers

… interesting on several levels; not least the questionable use of the term 'GPS' by people who really should know better.

Galactic positioning system? Or maybe GPS is just generic for locating systems as Hoover is for Vacuum cleaner.

Nor really enough resolution to be able to use pulsars as XYZ readouts for the workshop.

                            regards Martin

                              Interesting stuff Michael.

As far as the" questionable use of the term 'GPS' by people who really should know better." goes though they have shown it in quotes and I think that we can all understand what they mean. I doubt that this would be the case if they had quoted IPPS, (Inter Planetary Positioning System) or maybe Galactic Positioning System ……………..( GPS……oh maybe …..!!) surprise

Purchased a useful little rotary indexing table, today.

No worm gearing, but 48 indexing detents, and a 'lock'.

Nice & compact for small work [table diameter 70mm].

Does anyone recognise it, please ?

This weekend was rather less frenetic than last weekend. On Saturday I flew my small glider. By the standards of this year it was a good day. After a 7kt average thermal off tow to 4500ft I set off to Corby. As is normally the case with me I then fumbled it and ended up taking the next half decent thermal at 2500ft near Kimbolton. While looking around I saw a B17 (Sally B?) pass a few hundred feet under me and slightly to one side, heading for Duxford. Rather appropriate as I was just south of Kimbolton and north of Thurleigh, both of which were B17 bases in WWII. I took a silent moment to remember the young men who flew, fought, and died in B17s so that I could have the freedom to do what I was doing. In other words flying cross country in my own glider when and how I wanted to and without fear or favour. As mentioned elsewhere on this forum I completely missed seeing the airship at Cardington despite flying over Bedford itself. In the evening I picked up a 2" UNC tap, bought on Ebay, from the seller in Bedford. Sunday afternoon I was tug pilot; pretty windy and rough as old boots. It's not often you leave the seat in the tug despite being firmly strapped in. Despite a lack of club members I did a few tows including a couple for spin checks, which gives one the chance for slightly longer tows to 3000 feet and the ability to meander around the countryside a bit more.

And now I'm catching up on the forum!

Quite possibly, I landed about 16:15, and beforehand I made a couple of good 6kt climbs in the St Neots area followed by a circuit over Bourn airfield to look at my bungalow. So I would have been over Bedford around 15:30 and a bit later. I came in from the north and went over the north of Bedford, as my mum lives in Brickhill. I left to the north east. My glider is white, as are all modern composite gliders, to stop them getting too hot and going soggy!

More to do with yesterday than today but I'm making good progress with Stewart Hart's Single Cylinder Horizontal Steam Engine (Pottymill)

                                                      cylinder.jpg

But the main interest is what happened to this new 3mm twist drill the very first time I used it drilling brass!

                                                      bent.jpg

Not only is it bent, it's unwound as well! I'm not sure where I bought it as it was loose in my spares box. I think it's probably a cheap DIY store drill intended for woodwork but even so…

                                                      Cheers,

                                                      Dave
